U2 Tribute: Unforgettable Fire - DROM
October 20, 2018 - New York

Unforgettable Fire, or "UF", was born on New Years Day in 1995 as one of the very first U2 tribute bands to ever perform in America. After over seventeen years of playing in some of the most prestigious venues on the East Coast, UF has formed a reputation among many to be one of the closest experiences to being at an actual live U2 show. The members of UF are also very dedicated fans of U2, and will not settle for anything less than complete authenticity. In addition to performing a very impressive array of U2 material from pre-Boy to the most recent No Line On The Horizon and beyond, the band does everything in their power (from wardrobe to lighting) to recreate the live U2 concert setting for their audiences. One of UF's last founding members from 1995, drummer George (Larry) Levesanos, still performs with the band. George is a veteran drummer on the New York City music scene and has performed in many other projects before forming UF. Joining the band in the summer of 2001 was singer Tony (Bono) Russo. Over the years, Tony has brought UF to a new level of authenticity as he is regarded as one of the country's top Bono look-a-likes. In late 2002, bassist Craig (Adam) Kiell adde... (read more)

The Gary Douglas Band - Rockwood Music Hall (Stage 2)
October 20, 2018 - New York City

Gary Douglas grew up in the streets of Brooklyn with a life soundtracked by Americana, Blues and Country: a mix of music that counters highly polished mainstream music. There's a certain realness that comes with this kind of music. Life isn't put through a lens of effects or manipulated to make sophisticated lyrics, it's just told like it is. This kind of music gave Douglas his drive in the days of his youth. "It became a religion to me, profound and meaningful. Music gave me a way to channel my feelings, whether I understood them or not. I always found an outlet for feelings I couldn't resolve, figure out or handle by playing music. It was indispensable." Rock music is a classic rite of passage that too often eventually gives way to the more polished mainstream once the turbulence of adolescence is over.

Whiskey Treaty - Rockwood Music Hall (Stage 2)
October 20, 2018 - New York City

The Whiskey Treaty unites songwriters of Americana, Rock and Roots-Folk music to share in their love of Western Mass, Music, Brotherhood and Whiskey!

Em & the Fates - Rockwood Music Hall (Stage 2)
October 20, 2018 - New York City

Led by dynamic front-woman Emily Kron, Em & The Fates is a New York-based septet delivering soulful three-part harmonies while fusing the best of soul-fuNK, motown and R&B. With a sound invoking at one moment The Supremes and the next a twist of Amy Winehouse with a touch of Freddie Mercury, Em & The Fates is a stylistic throwback with a feminist lens, rooted in contemporary lyrics & themes, addressing questions of identity, gender, spirituality, heartbreak and self-love.

"American Captives: Lena Baker & Sandra Bland" By Connie Winston @ Dixon Place - Dixon Place
Through October 20, 2018 - New York City

After a one-day trial in 1945, an all-white male jury deliberates for under an hour and sentences Lena Baker to death for killing her abusive lover. Three days after being pulled over by a Texas State Trooper in 2015 for not using a turn signal, Sandra Bland was found dead in a Waller County jail cell. In a poignant, visceral 65-minute theatrical experience combining the two stories, Connie Winston's American Captives: Lena Baker & Sandra Bland articulates how little has changed in the relationship between Black women and the United States justice system in 60 years between the deaths of Lena and Sandra. This unapologetic personal accounting - written / performed by Winston and directed by Rhonda "Passion" Hansome - bares new awareness of timeworn atrocities. Six performances only - on Friday and Saturday evenings @ 7:30pm between October 5th and 20th. This Dixon Place commission is made possible, in part, with private funds from The Jerome Foundation, and public funds from NY State Council on the Arts w/the support of Gov Andrew Cuomo & the NY State Legislature.

Ruston Kelly - Mercury Lounge
October 23, 2018 - New York

Ruston Kelly writes and performs the kinds of songs that inspire novels and movies. You could call him a bastard disciple of Kurt Cobain and Townes Van Zandt, and he'd be totally cool with that. He's just as comfortable wearing a cowboy hat as he is in a Slayer t-shirt. His story so far twists and turns through heartbreak and triumph, an overdose and rehab, empty dive bars and packed venues, living everywhere from South Carolina to Brussels, and as he puts it, "finally getting my shit together and proposing to the love of my life." It's this unbelievable experience that informs Ruston's singular style -- a gravelly patchwork of folk lyricism, grunge attitude, country heart, Americana spirit, and rock energy. Not only has he penned songs for Tim McGraw ("Nashville Without You"), Josh Abbott Band ("Front Row Seat"), and more, but his independent solo debut EP Halloween earned acclaim from KCRW, Consequence of Sound, RELIX, Apple Music, and more. He logged countless miles on the road sharing the stage with the likes of The Lumineers and Robert Earl Keen in addition to performing at Bonnaroo and Wakarusa. It's no coincidence that he took to music as an infant. "The first sound I rememb... (read more)

Kikagaku Moyo - Katra Lounge
October 24, 2018 - New York

Kikagaku Moyo/??? (Japanese for Geometric Patterns) is the musical union between five free spirits. Go Kurosawa (drums, Vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (Guitar, Vocals) formed the band in 2012 as a free artist's collective. They met Kotsuguy (Bass) while he was recording noise from vending machines and Akira (Guitar) through their university. Ryu Kurosawa had been studying Sitar in India, upon returning home he found the perfect outlet for his practice. They recorded their first EP in a day and posted it to Bandcamp. On the other side of the world, a small label from Greece was listening and offered to press a limited run of LPs. Interest picked up through the blogging community and the band found tight group of dedicated fans around the globe. Since 2013 the band has released two full lengths, an EP, and several singles. They have toured Australia, the United States, Europe and Japan extensively. Kikagaku Moyo love to connect with people through performing, whether they are playing in a barn deep in a Swedish forest, on a desolate Mediterranean beach, or beside a sleepy river at 2014's Levitation Fest they bring out the magic in everyone present.

Exquisite Corpse: Sarah Lucas and the Body in Pieces - New Museum
October 25, 2018 - New York,

Bringing together scholars, writers, and artists, this panel will explore strands of Surrealism, psychoanalysis, sexuality, and abjection in Sarah Lucas's recastings of the human form. Panelists will consider expressions of desire, disgust, violence, intimacy, and humor in Lucas's corporeal sculptures, as well as their currency in a new era of contested gender politics. The conversation will respond to the exhibition "Sarah Lucas: Au Naturel." which occupies the three main floors of the New Museum and brings together more than 150 works in photography, sculpture, and installation to reveal the breadth and ingenuity of Lucas's practice. Like the exhibition, the conversation will address the ways in which Lucas's works engage with crucial debates about gender and power along with the legacy of Surrealism—from her clever transformations of everyday objects to her exploration of sexual ambiguity and the tension between the familiar and the disorienting or absurd.

Ozan Aksoy Album Release Concert - DROM
November 04, 2018 - New York

The New York City based musician Ozan Aksoy's destiny was set with his birth name - Ozan - an ancient title for mystical bards in West Asia. As a child growing up in Turkey, he first learned to play the saz (lute) from his father, and soon demonstrated remarkable breadth as a multi-instrumentalist, becoming proficient in many of the string, woodwind, and percussive instruments of the region. He developed a passion for the music of ethnic and religious minorities in his country including the Kurds, Armenians, Laz, and Alevi, among others. Later in college, as an early member of the critically-acclaimed ensemble Karde? Türküler (meaning Ballads of Solidarity), Ozan and his colleagues performed the songs of these unrecognized and suppressed peoples, pushing the boundaries of inclusion in Turkey. During his time with the group they released four albums and toured extensively throughout Europe, spreading their message of diversity and acceptance. Ozan then relocated to the United States to complete a doctorate in ethnomusicology and further develop his multicultural repertoire.

Steady Holiday - Mercury Lounge
November 10, 2018 - New York

Steady Holiday is an appropriate name for an artist whose music feels like the soundtrack to your fondest memory. Or your deepest heartbreak. Or the dream sequence from a David Lynch film. There's a nostalgia present in Dre Babinski's songwriting that leaves you longing for the familiarity of a bygone era - just not one you can necessarily pin down. After years growing up playing in bands around Los Angeles, Dre recently began writing and recording for herself - on her own, in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. Establishing a sound defined by her featherlight voice floating above sweeping strings, her 2016 debut Under the Influence led to opening for artists like Mitski, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Whereas the first record took us on a trip through the deeply personal, Dre's sophomore album Nobody's Watching zooms way out. What began as a concept record about two archetypal crooks developed into an exploration of universal themes like greed, fear and self-interest; the ugly and troubling edges of human nature. It's a good time for that. "I've been just as affected by our current politics as anyone, but it only takes one step bac... (read more)
