Moroni: The Riches of Renaissance Portraiture - The Frick Collection
Through March 24, 2019 - New York

Moroni: The Riches of Renaissance Portraiture is the first major exhibition in the United States to focus on the portraiture of Giovanni Battista Moroni (1520/24–1579/80). A painter of portraits and religious subjects, Moroni is celebrated as an essential figure in the northern Italian tradition of naturalistic painting that includes Leonardo da Vinci, the Carracci, and Caravaggio. This exhibition, shown exclusively at The Frick Collection, brings to light the innovation of the artist, whose role in a larger history of European portraiture has yet to be fully explored. His famous Tailor (National Gallery, London), for example, anticipates by decades the "narrative" portraits of Rembrandt, and his Pace Rivola Spini (Accademia Carrara, Bergamo), arguably the first independent full-length portrait of a standing woman produced in Italy, prefigures the many women that Van Dyck would paint in this format in the following century.

Masterpieces of French Faience: Selections from the Sidney R. Knafel Collection - The Frick Collection
Through March 24, 2019 - New York

The exhibition in the Portico Gallery presents a promised gift to the Frick Collection: seventy-five objects from the collection of Sidney R. Knafel — the finest collection of French faience in private hands — to tell the fascinating and complex history of this particular art form. A feat of great technical achievement, French faience was introduced to Lyon in the second half of the sixteenth century by skilled Italian immigrants — the French word "faience" derives from the northern Italian city of Faenza. Over the next two centuries, production spread throughout the provinces of metropolitan France. The fine decoration of French faience draws inspiration from multiple sources, including Italian maiolica, Asian porcelain, and contemporary engravings. The forms of its platters, bowls, plates, and ewers derive mostly from European ceramics and silver. These influences come together in works of great originality.

eadership in Turbulent Times - Asia Society and Museum
March 25, 2019 - New York

Kevin Rudd is Australia's 26th prime minister. In fact, he is one of the few Australians to have served twice as his country's prime minister. He was also Australia's foreign minister between 2010 and 2012. In his new book, The PM Years, Rudd recounts his early triumphs and challenges in the business of government. The book deals with Rudd's relationship with the Bush and Obama administrations during the Global Financial Crisis, a challenging relationship with China, as well as his global activism on climate change. A controversial figure in Australian domestic politics, Rudd began his prime ministership by delivering a national apology to Aboriginal Australians, as well as initiating a range of far-reaching reforms in Australian health and education policy. He also introduced Australia's first paid parental leave scheme. But beyond the policy challenges he tackled, Rudd takes us into cabinet, the prime minister's office, and the back-corridor conversations that reshaped the country.

Barbara Kingsolver & Richard Powers - 92Y
March 28, 2019 - Upper East Side

Barbara Kingsolver's new novel, Unsheltered, is the story of two families in two centuries navigating the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. Richard Powers's The Overstory is a novel of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of—and paean to—the natural world. "It is monumental," wrote Kingsolver. "A gigantic fable of genuine truths held together by a connective tissue of tender exchange. Using the tools of story, Powers pulls readers heart-first into a perspective so much longer-lived and more subtly developed than the human purview that we gain glimpses of a vast, primordial sensibility."
