Axelle Red - Highline Ballroom

Discovered by a talent scout at age 15, Belgian pop superstar Axelle Red tasted her first success with the single "Little Girls," which became a national hit. Although she spent some time studying law in the late '80s and early '90s, she soon devoted herself fully to her music career, releasing the hit singles "Kennedy Boulevard" and "Aretha et Moi." Her first full-length, Sans Plus Attendre, dropped in 1993. The album became Belgium's best-selling record of all time, and spurred by the success of her soulful follow-up release A Tatons (1996), Red became an international superstar.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo / SMOD / Bibi Tanga & The Selenites / DJ Chief Boima - SummerStage
July 22, 2012 -

The eternal youth of the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rythmo from Benin, Africa has stunned deejays and African music aficionados with their pure African funky sound for over forty years. Their voice, brass section, guitar and percussion weaves together to create an irresistible Afro-funk sound deeply anchored in voodoo music, beat out by an immense vertical drum. By inter-mixing these vibrant traditional rhythms with psychedelic guitar riffs, unreal organ harmonies and funk and soul elements, the band has gone on to perform throughout Africa and internationally alongside other famous African musicians such as such as Seun Kuti and Amadou and Mariam. The band has juste released a new album, Cotonou Club featuring musicians from Scottish band, Franz FerdinandtF, Angelique Kidjo and Fatoumata Diawara.

PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 22, 2012 - New York

When Pure Prairie League (PPL for short) formed in the late 1960s, no one had a label for the music the band played. Although the group drew heavily from '60s rock, it added a heavy dose of country and high-flying harmony that gave it a unique sound soon to become known as country rock. Beginning as a group of young musicians playing cover tunes in local bars, PPL soon signed to the RCA after staff from the label caught a band performance in Cleveland, Ohio. The group released its eponymous debut in 1972 and quickly followed up with Bustin' Out that same year.

THE RISING A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 23, 2012 - New York

The Rising is a brotherhood of friends, some with ties that date back nearly two decades. Much like Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, they take the stage more like a gang than a band. They collectively roll up their sleeves and go to work, night after night. They were all cut from the worn denim of blue collar towns, and they paid musical dues playing dive bars and juke joints. What you hear is the musical truth. What you see is the embodiment of friendship, and what you feel is the spiritual healing that can only be supplied by a great rock n' roll band.

July 24, 2012 - New York

Sierra Hull & Highway 111 - Highline Ballroom
July 24, 2012 -

Boundaries -- age, genre or otherwise -- don't hamper an artist like Sierra Hull. She's already earned considerable respect in the bluegrass world, the IBMA's voting members having nominated her for no fewer than five awards over three years --there's a good chance she'll be the first woman to win the mandolin category. But as a player, a singer and a songwriter, she also has remarkable range, the potential to win over ears unfamiliar with Bill Monroe and give performances of broad cultural importance, as she's done at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the National Prayer Breakfast. Matt Glaser -- head of Berklee's American Roots Music Program -- put it this way: "She has no limitations as a musician." Daybreak is certainly a noteworthy arrival; you can't help but feel it's also just the beginning.

Aspiring musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, rappers and spoken word artists try their best to please the audiences that can make them an Apollo legend. Then get ready to cheer or jeer as you decide who stays and who gets booted off stage. At Amateur Night, you tell the performers to be good or be gone! Amateur Night at the Apollo is hosted by the comedian Capone. Each show begins with a festive pre-party featuring video and music by DJ Jess. And keep a lookout for master impressionist C.P. Lacey, the resident Executioner who sweeps bad talent off the stage.

The Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series - SummerStage

Tommy Emmanuel - The Town Hall
July 25, 2012 -

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia's most respected musicians. The legendary guitarist has a professional career that spans five decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians throughout the world. A household name in his native Australia, Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Tommy's unique style -- he calls it simply "finger style" -- is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy plays all that -- and more -- on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this "fingerpicker" style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans.

THE RISING A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 26, 2012 - New York

The Rising is a brotherhood of friends, some with ties that date back nearly two decades. Much like Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, they take the stage more like a gang than a band. They collectively roll up their sleeves and go to work, night after night. They were all cut from the worn denim of blue collar towns, and they paid musical dues playing dive bars and juke joints. What you hear is the musical truth. What you see is the embodiment of friendship, and what you feel is the spiritual healing that can only be supplied by a great rock n' roll band.

KINDRED THE FAMILY SOUL - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 26, 2012 - New York

Consisting of married couple Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon, R&B duo Kindred the Family Soul first emerged from the turn-of-the-century Philadelphia neo soul movement that also birthed Jill Scott, who discovered the pair when they were performing at the Black Lily Film & Music Festival. Both Dantzler and Graydon had begun their careers as solo performers, and although they began making music together at the beginning of their relationship, marriage and a family had pushed them to scale back their musical work in favor of finding steady extra-musical income. Soon after the pair's return to performing and their subsequent discovery by Scott, they signed to Scott's Hidden Beach Recordings label and released their debut record, Surrender to Love (2003), which featured the tracks "Stars" and "Far Away." The album earned the duo a nomination for a Soul Train Music Award in 2004.

Jeffrey Gaines - Highline Ballroom
July 26, 2012 -

Heralded by Rolling Stone as "an ethereal soul ... insistent, impassioned, full of self-knowledge ... the voice of a new generation," singer-songwriter Jeffrey Gaines grew up in Harrisburg, PA. Raised by parents more inclined to spin soul classics by Aretha and Otis than the New Wave and Brit Rock blasting from their son's room, a teenage Gaines began playing guitar in several local garage bands covering The Who, The Kinks, and The Jam. He soon decided to set out on his own and quickly landed a record deal in 1992, releasing his self-titled debut that same year. The album featured the hit single "Hero in Me" and garnered four stars from the Philadelphia Inquirer. Somewhat Slightly Dazed (1994) and Galore (1998) followed suit in the ensuing years, prompting Interview Magazine to call Gaines's music "soul-searching" and "refreshingly free of jargon, sentiment, or cliche."

The Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow - Highline Ballroom

DELBERT McCLINTON - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 27, 2012 - New York

With the release of his 1975 solo debut, Victim of Life's Circumstances, Delbert McClinton firmly stamped his Ft. Worth-bred blend of blues, country, and blue-eyed soul onto the pop musical landscape. A succession of influential and critically acclaimed albums followed, along with coups like appearing on Saturday Night Live in its heyday. He scored hits like "Giving It Up for Your Love" and "Sandy Beaches," won a Grammy with Bonnie Raitt for their "Good Man, Good Woman" duet, and over the years has enjoyed covers of his songs by Emmylou Harris, The Blues Brothers, Vince Gill, Wynonna, Lee Roy Parnell, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood, among others.

The Cab & Parachute - Highline Ballroom
July 27, 2012 -

The Cab - The Cab got its start while band members Alex DeLeon (vocals) and Cash Cooligan (bass) were still in high school. Panic! At the Disco's Spencer Smith got ahold of the group's demo and was so impressed that he helped the young crew ink a deal with Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen Records, which released The Cab's debut album Whisper War in 2008. Featuring singles "I'll Run," "One of Those Nights," and "Bounce," the disc impressed rockers and pop aficionados alike. Parachute - Mixing full-throttle rock with dollops of blue-eyed soul, vintage R&B, and melodic pop radio anthems in the making, Parachute has arrived. The band's wide range of influences is reflected in the songs on the group's debut album, Losing Sleep (2009). Produced by Grammy winner John Shanks, the album crested at No. 1 on the iTunes and Amazon charts, driven by the success of the hit singles "She is Love" and "Under Control."

Gary Clark Jr. / GIVERS - SummerStage
July 28, 2012 -

Rarely does an artist explode onto the music scene like 26-year-old singer-guitarist Gary Clark Jr. when he delivered his incendiary debut performance of his song "Bright Lights" at Eric Clapton's 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival. A rocking soul man for a new generation, he was weaned on John Lee Hooker and T-Bone Walker but fuses his deep blues influence with a love of classic hip-hop and contemporary soul. His voice weaves between a melodic lilt and a seasoned blues howl with his guitar licks dancing and dodging between and behind the beat as if the essence of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre loom in his head by way of the Mississippi Delta.

GINUWINE - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 28, 2012 - New York

One of R&B's preeminent love men during the '90s heyday of hip-hop soul, Ginuwine first emerged in 1996 with the multi-platinum disc The Bachelor, produced with superstar beatmaker Timbaland. Featuring what one critic called "silky, seductive vocals [purring] beside Timbaland's jagged, hyperkinetic beats to create a uniquely edgy R&B sound," the album became an instant classic, with "Pony," the daring first single, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart late in 1996. Other standout cuts from the disc included "Tell Me Do U Wanna" and a blazing cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry." "When Timbaland and I did The Bachelor, that was one of the biggest moments in my life," Ginuwine recalls. "Not everyone has the opportunity to be so popular with their first release. Believe me, I know I was blessed."

Jonah Smith - Highline Ballroom
July 28, 2012 -

Jonah Smith has been operating as a musical iconoclast for years and is well known in New York as a top-flight songwriter and a powerful, expressive singer. He has dipped his toes into the waters of many scenes and is equally as comfortable performing on a festival stage as he is at a house concert. After getting his start on the Burlington, VT, music scene in the mid-'90s, the soul pop singer-songwriter relocated to Brooklyn around the turn of the millennium. Steadily building up a following with his band (which included bassist Ben Rubin, Bob Reynolds on saxophone, David Soler on guitar, and Marko Djordjevic on drums), he released his first independent albums early in the new decade - Industry Rule (2001) and Beneath the Underdog (2003). The discs garnered glowing feedback but failed to generate a major splash for the aspiring singer-songwriter.
