Musical Performance: Javier Ruibal - Alwan for the Arts
June 01, 2013 - New York

Javier Ruibal, considered one of Spain's national music treasures, performs at Alwan in an enchanting concert of original songs reflecting the many diverse influences of his native Andalusia. An iconic singer, composer and guitarist, his music is distinguished by an innovative style that combines the rhythms and cultures of flamenco, the Maghreb, Sephardic music, jazz and the Caribbean. (*A small online fee is applied - use printout as your ticket) *** About Javier Ruibal - Born in Cadiz, Andalusia, the heterodox and self-trained Javier Ruibal began his career in 1987 and since then has given numerous concerts in and outside Spain, both solo and with such music greats as Pablo Milanes, Joaquin Sabina, Carmen París and Carlos Cano. His songs reference Spanish poetry, especially the poets of the Generation of 27, such as Rafael Alberti and Federico Garcia Lorca. He has also composed for other artists, including Ana Belén, Martirio, Javier Krahe, Pasión Vega and Mónica Molina, and has created music for film and for different audiovisual productions. His contribution to the arts earned him the prestigious Medal of Arts from the Andalusian Regional Government. "Ruibal sings, above all, to carnal love, but like a modern King Midas, everything he touches turns to beauty." - El Païs "Singing songwriting's best-kept secret. Genuine, popular, intelligent and seductive." - La Razón "To call his songs love songs is to deny their originality." - The Independent "Javier Ruibal possesses an exquisite and rigorous desire to integrate with the social history alongside which he lives. His songs are at once beautiful and responsible, intimate and participatory, personal and universal. I believe that his enduring power of conviction depends, above all, on this dual sensibility, human and artistic, which is, in the end, an unforgettable lesson." - José Manuel Caballero Bonald, Spanish novelist, lecturer and poet ***

Their TV concert special "The Dan Band: I Am Woman" aired on Bravo and was directed by McG and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. They've appeared on numerous TV shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Late Show, Last Call with Carson Daly, Ellen, Spike TV's Guys Choice Awards and The Tonight Show, where Finnerty has been featured as a regular correspondent. NYC Popfest 2013 - Bell House
June 01, 2013 - Brooklyn

Approaching a quarter century of recording and performing, Christchurch, New Zealand's The Bats have survived seven albums and five world tours with the original line-up of Kaye Woodward, Malcolm Grant, Paul Kean and Robert Scott intact. With a sound at the jangle/indie end of the pop spectrum, the band made significant headway in the States in the 80s alongside Flying Nun label-mates The Chills and The Clean. The 90s saw tours of the US and Europe, supporting the likes of Radiohead, Belly, and R. E.M.. Paul, Kaye, and Malcolm form side-project Minisnap; Bob has released solo work and can also be found in The Clean and The Magick Heads. TIGERCATS Tigercats are a band from East London who make pop music with guitars, keyboards and drums. Tigercats' singer Duncan played in Esiotrot until suddenly he didn't, and after a respectful interval of ambling around for 18 months he asked his brother Giles to join on bass in a new band. The name Tigercats appeared out of the air and was soon followed by Jonny on drums, Stefan on guitar and Laura on keyboard. FLOWERS Despite only having formed in April/May last year, Flowers have already toured Europe with The Pains Of Being Pure Of Heart and recorded with Stuart Moxham of Young Marble Giants, whom they have now just supported at a sold out Dingwalls! Fittingly, Flowers draw a line between the joyous fuzzpop of the Pains and the minimalist brilliance of Young Marble Giants - with screaming distortion calming down to singer Rachel playing solo on a one-stringed bass. The trio create a wall of sound larger than the sum of their parts - catchy pop songs hidden in noise. Flowers' self-titled EP is now out on Cloudberry Records, and a single on Odd Box Records is due in the next month... Cloudberry says they may never have sold so many pre-orders before for any band or any record ever. The band have also just signed to Fortuna POP!, so a single and album are on their way from this label too. The band are playing several festivals this year, and spending the summer playing shows and recording with Connor Hanwick (The Drums, TPOBPAH) in New York. THE HOBBES FANCLUB The Hobbes Fanclub make their 7" vinyl debut with Your Doubting Heart out August 7th on Shelflife. The band hails from Bradford, England and was started in 2008 by singer/guitarist Leon Carroll. After releasing two split cdr singles on Cloudberry and Dufflecoat Records, Leon was joined by Louise and Adam to fill in the rhythm section on bass and drums respectively. Together they share their love for distortion pedals and reverb and play energetic pure pop songs. There is a bit of an early 90s attitude about them that feels so needed right now in 2012. Fans of Boyracer and The Ropers should take note. The Hobbes Fanclub will make their North American debut at NYC Popfest. THE PROCTORS The Proctors were formed by Gavin Priest in 1993 following the demise of The Cudgels in which Gavin had been lead guitarist. The group recorded a well received demo tape which led to Albert of Sunday Records (USA) offering to release a 7" single by the band. The present line up of Gavin Priest, Adrian 'Josef' Jones, Margaret Calleja and Thomas Aherne are busy working on material for their forthcoming album to be released on Shelflife. The band have recently performed at Indietracks, London Popfest and Madrid Popfest. AZURE BLUE Azure Blue is the new project from Tobias Isaksson, a talented songwriter and colorful profile on the Swedish pop scene. His former bands Irene and Laurel Music were signed to respected Swedish label Labrador Records and attracted worldwide recognition. Winner of the Swedish Independent Grammy Awards - Manifest 2012 (Previous winners in this category: The Knife, Jens Lekman, The Embassy, The Honeydrips, El Perro Del Mar), Azure Blue will make their US debut at NYC Popfest. 18+

Mint Condition - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
June 04, 2013 - New York

Once upon a time there were great funk and R&B bands like Earth, Wind & Fire, The Meters, War, Kool & The Gang, Slave, and numerous others who constantly broke down musical barriers. The musicality of these units was superior - they could rock or funk out as easily as they could move the crowd with a soulful tenor ballad. In the '90s, a dynamic young new band emerged to continue this tradition: Mint Condition, now the greatest self-contained R&B band of our time. Mint Condition does it all - delivering hard-bitten funk with a hip-hop edge, rocking out with screaming lead guitar, and crooning lush, "baby-making" soul ballads. The much sought-after band, which last year marked its 20th anniversary, has amassed a string of hits and performs hundreds of live shows each year. The members of Mint Condition all grew up in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. The band's first single "Are You Free" generated some buzz, but it wasn't until Washington D.C.'s WHUR-FM broke the follow-up ballad, 1991's "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)," that the band experienced its first runaway smash. "Breakin'" peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's R&B chart and No. 6 in Pop's Top 10, remaining on the charts for 34 weeks. After that, two other stellar albums - From the Mint Factory (1993) and Definition of a Band (1996) - and a chain of hit singles followed, including "Forever in Your Eyes," "U Send Me Swingin'," "Someone to Love," So Fine," "You Don't Have to Hurt No More" and "What Kind of Man Would I Be." Even when the Perspective label folded and the band moved to Elektra, its fourth CD, Life's Aquarium (1999), spawned the Billboard R&B Top 5 hit, "If You Love Me." The band released its fifth CD, Livin' the Luxury Brown, under its own Cagedbird Regords imprint in 2005. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. The band's follow-up release, E-Life (2008), garnered critical acclaim as well, featuring the hit "Nothing Left to Say." In 2011, Mint Condition marked the 20th anniversary of its first chart hit with 7..., the group's seventh studio album released in April on Shanachie Entertainment/Caged Bird. The album sounds unlike anything else in the R&B world - or any other world - today, once again demonstrating that Mint Condition is one of those rare groups on the scene with its own unique sound. Boasting tracks like "Unsung," "Not My Daddy," "Walk On," and the hit single "Caught My Eye," the disc has already ascended to classic status - a fitting commemoration of two decades of music from this game-changing outfit.

Over the next three years, Bonds co-wrote and recorded hit after good time hit: School is Out, School is In, Dear Lady Twist, Twist, Twist Senora, Seven Day Weekend and others. He performed throughout the world, rising to a status so high that on a 1963 tour of Europe, he headlined above a group of relative newcomers... The Beatles. A rare distinction for Gary is that he managed to transcend the decades with hits and in the eighties. His new friendship with longtime fans, Bruce Springsteen and Miami Steve Van Zandt led to a musical collaboration that resulted in Bond's Dedication and On The Line albums with singles: This Little Girl, Out Of Work, Jole Blon and Daddy's Come Home.. Billboard declared: "... his gritty and powerful vocals...even better than before...." Like clockwork, twenty years later, Gary arrived with a new CD of contemporary blues Back In 20 ...and the buzz was on again. It earned him "Comeback album of the year" from the Blues foundation. With the release of his newest CD, Let Them Talk, his 2012 Christmas CD, Christmas Is On and the forthcoming biography, That's My Story And I'm Sticking To It, Gary continues bringing his never-ending tour to rapturous audiences Songwriter, singer, music legend, Gary U.S. Bonds & his RoadHouse Rockers dishing out hearty, historical rock, roll and rhythm & blues.
