ZEBRA - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
May 21, 2011 -

Eddie Trunk Rocks/Q104.3FM presents ZEBRA featuring Randy Jackson (vocals/guitar), Felix Hanemann (bass/keyboards) and Guy Gelso (drums). One of the most exciting musical events of the 80's was the breakout success of Zebra, as they rose from regional popularity to national recognition. Their 1983 debut album sounded more like an experienced mid-career production than a first effort. Generating a groundswell of media and popular support, the LP became one of rock radio's most played albums and remained on the national charts for eight months. Such stand-out tracks as "Who's Behind the Door?" (which went gold) and "Tell Me What You Want" became and has remained video as well as audio favorites. This first release proved to be the fastest selling rock album in Atlantic Record's history! Zebra's second album, "No Tellin' Lies", found the band tapping their potential in a variety of new areas. The trio sought to emcompass a wide range of moods, and expanded their sonic array by using state-of-the-art digital keyboard instruments. The songs range from the hard rocking sounds of "Wait Until the Summer's Gone" to the Beatle-esque ballad, "Lullabye." The result was a diverse and ambitious follow up. With the release of their third Atlantic effort, "3.V", Zebra took their career one step farther: the album's credits read "Produced by Randy Jackson and Zebra". Thus, for the very first time, the group gained complete control of its creative output. Most characteristic of the band's sound, "3.V" is also Zebra's most cohesive effort to date. A collection of the finest songs they have ever written, the biggest sounding album they had made, "3.V" clearly shows Zebra's lasting power and originality. From the outset, Zebra has created music out of contrast and diversity, from massive walls of electronic sounds to lyrical acoustic moods. With this third album, they made their intentions clearer, their stance stronger, and their message more eloquent. "Zebra Live", the band's fourth record release, was an answer to the group's fan's decade-long request. It captures the band's energy and power on stage. Containing live versions of hits from previous releases, it also features the previously unreleased "Last Time" and Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean". ZEBRA IV was released July 2003 to much critical acclaim, Zebra is still meeting the constant demand for their live performances.

Front Line Assembly - Highline Ballroom
May 21, 2011 -

Front Line Assembly is the primary focus of Vancouver-based musician Bill Leeb. A founding member of Skinny Puppy, Leeb moved on to form FLA in 1986 with Michael Balch, releasing some cassettes (since released as Total Terror I & II) which paved the way for their 1987 releases: The Initial Command, State of Mind, and Corrosion. In late 1988, they recorded the mini-LP Disorder, since combined with Corrosion and released as Corroded Disorder. Their 1989 release, Gashed Senses and Crossfire, further cemented their popularity in the industrial scene, and prompted their first world tour. By 1990, Balch had departed and Rhys Fulber rounded out the duo, releasing Caustic Grip. But it was two years later when the duo released what for many has become the genre's crowning moment, the classic album Tactical Neural Implant, which to this day still defines the best of industrial music. FLA enraged many of their fans in 1994 when they began to experiment with their established electronic-only sound. Millenium, with its heavy doses of live and sampled metal guitars, dared its audience to grow and expand with the band beyond industrial's perceived barriers. Front Line stepped to the firing line again in 1995 with Hard Wired, which reflected both a return to form and a continued embracing of the guitar. Hard Wired not only picked up where Implant left off, it improved on the sound by adding in elements of all of their side projects. A fall European tour was recorded for the 1996 release Live Wired, their first concert CD ever. Also in 1996, Front Line Assembly followed up Hard Wired with two CD singles, "Circuitry" and "Plasticity", and toured North America with Numb and Die Krupps. 1997 saw the first realignment of Front Line Assembly since 1990, with the departure of Rhys Fulber and the addition of Chris Peterson to the ranks. Front Line's 1998 album, FLAvor of the Weak, featured the band's first flirtation with electronica. Re-Wind, a twin CD of remixes, followed later that year. The duo then released Implode in 1999, and Epitaph in 2001. Epitaph exhibited building intros, trancy synth lines, pulsing beats, and solid melodies, which proved to be contagious anthems for a new future of industrial music. After the 2001 release of Epitaph, another changing of the FLA "guard" occurred: Chris Peterson left, and original member, Rhys Fulber (Fear Factory, Conjour One) returned. The newly charged Front Line Assembly delivered the highly anticipated Maniacal single in late 2003. The successful single laid the ground work for the 2004 album Civilization, and Vanished EP which featured three unreleased tracks. Then finally in 2005 came the event that everyone was waiting for, a Front Line Assembly fusion. Bill Leeb, Rhys Fulber, and Chris Peterson with new members Jeremy Inkel, Adrian White, and Jarod Slingerland began working on the 2006 album, Artificial Soldier. The newly re-formed line-up managed to create an album that no only lived up to the expectations of Front Line Assembly fans, but surpassed them. Heavy pounding beats, atmospheric strings, percolating melodies, dynamic synths and Bill Leeb's trademark vocals couldn't be fused together any tighter if you tried to do it at an atomic level. As if all of those factors weren't enough, two guest vocalists appear on Artificial Soldier – Eskil Simonsson from Covenant (on "The Storm") and Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242 (on "Future Fail")! After the release of the album, the band embarked on a successful world tour, and released the remix album Fallout one year later. Throughout the years, FLA has seen many line-up changes. Bill Leeb remains the constant behind the band. For 2010, a new line-up has emerged featuring Jeremy Inkel, Chris Peterson on programming duties, and Jared Slingerland on Guitars, and FLA has been joined by Three Inches of Blood guitarist Justin Hagberg, and guest keyboardist Craig Huxtable of Landscape Body Machine. The result of this reinvigorated lineup is the all new album Improvised. Electronic. Device. As well as the Shifting Through The Lens single. The new songs demonstrate that FLA has not lost its edge over the past almost two and a half decades. And as if Front Line Assembly's legacy and namesake alone weren't enough for the album, Al Jougensen from Ministry contributes his vocals to the song "Stupidity." Bill's work can also be heard on a wide number of side projects, including Noise Unit, Delerium, InterMix, Cyberaktif, Equinox, and Synaesthesia. Bill has also contributed music to the popular video game, Quake 3 - The Arena.

Roy Rogers Bands featuring Doors Keyboardist Ray Manzarek - Highline Ballroom
May 23, 2011 -

One of the most influential keyboard players in the history of rock music, Doors member Ray Manzarek grew up admiring the boogie-woogie piano players that became popular in the '50s. After dropping out of U.C.L.A.'s law program, he went back to graduate school, eventually enrolling in the prestigious U.C.L.A film program. It was here that Manzarek helped form the Doors. Being one of the most influential rock bands in America, they would go on to release several albums before the untimely death of Jim Morrison in July of 1971. Devastating the band, they attempted two albums without Morrison featuring Manzarek on vocals, but the band slowly fell apart. In 1973, he released his first solo album, The Golden Scarab, and began to tour again. 1974's The Whole Thing Started With Rock & Roll Now It's out of Control came next, but Manzarek was itching to work with a band again and eventually started Ray Manzarek's Nite City. They released an eponymous album in 1976 and Golden Days Diamond Nights in 1977. It was soon after that that the punk movement became a driving force in Los Angeles, and the band X contacted Manzarek about working with them in a production capacity. The end result was Los Angeles, one of the all-time most important punk albums. When Oliver Stone's film biography The Doors was released in 1991, Manzarek came out of semi-retirement to voice his displeasure in how the band was portrayed by the controversial filmmaker. In 1993, he released an album of Michael McClure's beat poetry over his keyboard playing, Love Lion, to a warm reception. At the turn of the century, he released an album with British musician/actor Darryl Read and saw his son score a major-label record deal with his band A.I. Although he has made some challenging and interesting music since that time, including the soundtrack to the film Love Her Madly in 2006, his huge influence over the world of rock will forever associate him with the Doors, and luckily Manzarek seems completely comfortable with that legacy.

Walker & The Queens All-Stars - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
May 24, 2011 -

Walker and The Brotherhood of the Grape: New York City is a melting pot, and the music of Walker is what is cooking. In the 1990's, He, along with the band Q-south, introduced New York City to a new sound.Rock attacked by flamenco guitars. His song and lyric writing in Q-South created the timeless C.D. Q-South, that along with a string of unforgettable performances scarred Manhattan and the USA. The band split in 1998. Walkers search for something new led him to collaborations with Soca sensations Machel Montano,Alison Hinds and Bunji Garlin. The Caribbean provided a brand new garden for Rock/Soca to take root. A string of hits later, and a few years after the debut release of Q-South, The Brotherhood of the Grape was assembled and the whole musical journey was recorded in the debut C.D. "Almost Homeless". 3 full C.D.'s of broken love, broken people, and broken images interwoven with magical musicianship from the world over. In 2003 The Brotherhood recorded a Christmas C.D. for Cancer entitled "Bar-Humbug" recorded in New York gin joints, a classic for every future holiday season. In 2005 the gang was at it again with the release of "The One and Lonely" and in 2008 The Soca hits collection "Soca and Me". Walker is in the studio preparing for a new Brotherhood release in 2011.

Popa Chubby & Coco Montoya - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
May 25, 2011 -

Born Ted Horowitz, Popa Chubby is a true native son of the Big Apple. He was born in 1960 in the Bronx and grew up in a neighborhood made famous by Robert DeNiro in the movie A Bronx Tale. His parents owned a candy store on the corner of 181st Street and Arthur Avenue. His early memories of hearing the juke box playing the hits of early sixties soul and R&B - and the neighborhood teens flocking around it - made a lasting impression on him. To this day the musical influence of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye are ever present in Popa's music. Popa Chubby's music, forged in the toughness that is New York City, takes blues to the cutting edge, where it highfives its contemporary cousins rock, rap, and hip hop. With his razor sharp, biting guitar, vocals from the gut, and top-notch skill as a songwriter, Popa Chubby artfully combines the rootsiness of blues with the more modern urban elements of today's popular music. GuitarOne magazine calls guitarist/vocalist Coco Montoya "the hottest southpaw in the blues" and raves about his "master touch and killer tone." The Boston Globe succinctly states that Montoya's music is "hot, blistering soul." From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya earned his status through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new prot?g? the secrets of Collins' "icy hot" style of blues guitar. Five years later, British blues icon John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. Mayall recruited him as guitarist in the legendary Bluesbreakers, and Montoya spent the next 10 years touring non-stop, proving himself to be a world-class guitar master in one of the most renowned blues bands in existence. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya released five solo albums and performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. At every show, fans' jaws dropped, and critics raved about Montoya's mind-bending guitar licks and fervent vocals. "The fiery blues that issue forth from Coco Montoya's guitar are awe-inspiring and boogie requiring," says The Village Voice.

Our originally scheduled show with Pinetop on May 26th will now be a Tribute To Pinetop featuring The Pinetop Perkins Band, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and special guests.. Come down and celebrate the life and music of a true blues luminary and friend... Bio: Pinetop Perkins, a delta blues pianist who played with Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Robert Nighthawk, died of a heart attack at his Austin, Texas home on March 21st. He was 97. "He was one of the last great Mississippi Bluesmen," B.B. King said in a statement. "He had such a distinctive voice, and he sure could play the piano. He will be missed not only by me, but by lovers of music all over the world." Perkins was raised on a plantation in Honey Island, Mississippi. He spent his childhood picking cotton and plowing fields with a mule, very rarely going to school. He began his musical career as a guitarist, but after severely damaging his left arm in a barroom knife fight in 1943 he switched to the piano. Around that same time he moved to Arkansas and began performing with blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson and slide guitarists Earl Hooker and Robert Nighthawk. By the Fifties he was backing musicians on early rock labels Sun and Chess. In 1969 he joined Muddy Waters' backing band, where he stayed for over a decade - appearing on all of his LP's of the era and backing him at The Last Waltz concert in 1976. He released his solo debut After Hours in 1988 at the age of 75, and recorded and toured consistently until shortly before his death. His 2008 disc Pinetop Perkins & Friends featured contributions from Eric Clapton and B.B. King.
