Benny Goodman: King of Swing - Rose Theater
Through January 13, 2018 -

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis often honors the iconic artists, albums, movements, and events that left distinctive marks on the jazz continuum. Tonight, the JLCO celebrates a single landmark performance: Benny Goodman's legendary 1938 debut at Carnegie Hall. In the country's most hallowed classical concert hall, the moment was about much more than Benny Goodman; it was, in many ways, a "debut" of jazz itself, an unprecedented presentation of authentic jazz and racial integration on a stage of unparalleled prestige. True to form, the "King of Swing" celebrated the music on its own terms, introducing the public to real jazz elements and extensive improvisation during an era fixated on dance music — and by the end of the evening, the response was ecstatic. Tonight's concert will consist entirely of pieces from the historic performance, including those made famous by Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Fats Waller, Louis Prima, and more. JLCO reedman Victor Goines serves as music director and performer, and special guests Anat Cohen, Janelle Reichman, and Ken Peplowski will add their virtuosic flair to the mix. Audiences can expect new and classic arrangements, burning solos, and a new take on the mid-concert jam session that went down in history. This concert has been chosen as one of our 30th anniversary landmark performances because of Benny Goodman's important role in jazz history, both musically and socially. This concert pays tribute to one of the first major public performances of a racially-integrated group, considered a milestone in the acceptance of jazz as America's classical music. Join our family! Our members and subscribers gain early access to concerts such as this one. Membership starts at $75 and offers benefits, invitations and more throughout the season. Subscribers purchase three or more concerts annually for priority seating and discounted tickets.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, Carnegie Hall
January 17, 2018 - New York City

Parsifal, Wagner's final opera, is a majestic work that reaches heavenly heights in its spiritually transcendent third act. Wagner was Bruckner's idol, and the sweeping breadth and tonal language of the older composer inspired much of his music. At the time of his death, Bruckner had only completed three movements of his Ninth Symphony, but what he left is compelling and deeply touching. His symphony ascends from a musical primordial haze to a finale that explores new harmonies and peace in its quiet closing benediction.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, Carnegie Hall
January 18, 2018 - New York City

"It's one of astonishing power and beauty," said The New York Times of violinist Janine Jansen's "full-bodied, polished-wood sound." She is the soloist in one of the Romantic era's great works: Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1. It is certainly a showpiece for the soloist, but the concerto is also a work of tremendous lyricism and emotional weight. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the great Mahler orchestras, performing the composer's Symphony No. 1 at Carnegie Hall—a work that delights with its sounds of nature and lilt of folk song, while uplifting the spirit with its sublime climax.

Glass + Schubert - Miller Theater at Columbia University
January 18, 2018 - Morningside Heights
