Accessories for July 4th in NYC

If you're looking for great accessories for NYC this 4th of July, keep in mind that the holiday can mean myriad things in the city. For the holiday traditionalists: prime seats along the East River for the annual Macy’s fireworks show (a crowd-pleaser, but a very crowded affair). For those with a penchant for sand and sun no matter the day: the beach party at Coney Island is an ideal fit. And for those of us who appreciate our concrete sidewalks with a side of greenery, head straight to Central Park. No matter your scenic preference, NYC has a place to spend the Fourth that will please anyone. To ensure you are properly prepared—steamy temps and/or thunderstorms are pretty much a guarantee—we’ve rounded up the necessary accoutrements to accompany youfor the holiday.

July 4th Accessories NYC: Fireworks on the East River

Tissot

40,000 fireworks over the course of nearly half an hour guarantees quite the show. In its annual pyrotechnic mania, Macy’s gives viewers on either side of the East River prime seats to take in the scene. The best views in Manhattan include anywhere near the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge, and Brooklyn boasts great views from the Promenade in historic Brooklyn Heights. To ensure you stake out a spot in time (the show starts around 9:30pm), be sure someone in your party is sporting the color-apropos Tissot Quickster, featuring a scratch-resistant face and navy strap.

To ward off potential cooler evening breezes, pack a cheery-red oversized scarf by Diane von Furstenberg.

July 4th Accessories NYC: Coney Island Beach Party

Century 21

There’s nothing quite as patriotic as watching the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest, a July 4thtradition on Coney Island. Last year’s winner devoured a whopping 62 hot dogs. It is wise to just consume one (or two) and then enjoy the rest of the festivities on the boardwalk and along the beach. The party starts right at 9am, leaving you ample time for Cyclone rides and catnaps in the sun. Make sure to bring a hat for sun protection—and style factor. The bigger the brim the better, which makes this straw hat from Century 21 a perfect pick. Another requisite item to pack? The beach towel. We’re particularly loving Roy Lichtenstein’s dreamy night seascape towel from the MoMA Design Store.

July 4th Accessories NYC: Picnic in Central Park

Picnics can be the best way to celebrate the Fourth, especially if you're the type who prefers no prior planning or scheduling required. Simply pick a spot in Central Park (Strawberry Fields has 2.5 acres of grassy expanse) and make sure to pack enough goodies to keep everyone satiated for hours. Make your alfresco celebration a classy affair and be sure to bring plates. We adore the tongue-in-cheek durable melamine plates from the MoMA Design Store that look like paper plates, but instead have tiny little (illustrated) ants. And because rain is pretty much always in the forecast for NYC in July, tuck the ingenious Handbag Raincoat from the MAD Museum Shop in with your supplies. It fits snugly over your leather satchel and keeps the rain away in as chic a way as possible.
