Bangles & Bracelets

The bangle has long been worn by some of the most stylish (and powerful, natch) women in history. Think Cleopatra (well, at least Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 eponymous film), Wonder Woman’s shiny “unbreakable” bracelets, and editrix Diana Vreeland’s signature pair by Verdura. While some of the most exquisite bangles are often found in exotic locales -- Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar or the eclectic markets of Hyderabad, India -- we’ve rounded up some beauties that can be stumbled upon right in Manhattan. No matter the ensemble, a bangle is sure to amp up your outfit by simply popping one on (or better yet, two).

Pomellato Tango bracelet

Stepping into the Madison Avenue outpost of Pomellato can feel a bit like entering a swank, Italian lounge with its tinted glass panels lining the walls. Despite its beautiful surroundings, the Tango bracelet, replete with deep amber-hued diamonds, demands attention and practically begs to be worn alongside a sun-kissed tan. Price upon request. 741 Madison Avenue; 212-879-2118;

Kate Spade Knot Bangle

Talk about a shipshape piece of jewelry. Kate Spade New York’s gold-plated knot bangle will look just as chic with a sweet, summer dress whether you are summer-ing on a yacht, or simply the Sheep Meadow in Central Park. 135 Fifth Avenue; 212-358-0420;

Jacob & Co. bracelet

Our only complaint about Jacob and Co.’s diamond-and-gold bracelet is that one may simply not be enough.  The bangle positively glows on the wrist, and embraces the company’s aesthetic that the more sumptuous materials–the better. 48 East 57th St.; 212-719-5887;

Alexander McQueen bangle

Considering spring has become the unofficial season of punk, thanks to the new Costume Institute exhibit at the Met, it is no wonder we are lusting after Alexander McQueen’s enamel bangle festooned with shiny skulls. $345. 417 West 14th Street; 212-645-1797;

Ashley Pittman bangle

Ashley Pittman’s horn-and-bronze bangles unite centuries-old African jewelry-making traditions (all pieces are hand-carved in Kenya) with modern, gilt accents. $495. Bergdorf Goodman, 754 Fifth Avenue; 212-753-7300;

Alex and Ani Initial bangle

The charm bracelet gets a grown up makeover on Alex and Ani’s Initial bangle. Whether you choose to pick one up as a gift for the friend-that-has-everything, or scoop one up for yourself, this is a piece that will be in your heavy accessory rotation. $24. 425 West Broadway; 646-484-5099;

Henri Bendel Petite Caviar bangle

Shinier really is better, at least on the Petite Caviar bangle from Henri Bendel. Swarovski crystals are nestled into a golden frame, and will pair well with everything from jeans and a tee to a fashionable LBD. $98. 712 Fifth Avenue; 212-247-1100;

Tory Burch Porter bangle

The luxe amazonite stones on the Porter bangle by Tory Burch have an exotic, South American vibe, and will add a dose of cheery color to your look. $250. 38-40 Little West 12th Street; 212-929-0125;

Alexis Bittar Lucite Bangle

Born-and-bred in NYC, Alexis Bittar’s designs are must-haves for city girls. We love the tongue-in-cheek combination of a hand-sculpted Lucite bangle with chunky, gold hardware. $150. Saks Fifth Avenue, 611 Fifth Avenue; 212-753-4000;

Aaron Basha Ladybug bangle

Aaron Basha’s Ladybug bangle is the very definition of everything we love about spring: pastels, flowers, and even diamonds to boot. We wouldn’t expect anything less from this always charming boutique. $24,500. 685 Madison Avenue; 212-644-1970;
