Matthias Goerne, baritone with Daniil Trifonov, piano & Musicians of the New York Philharmonic

"Few artists have burst onto the classical music scene in recent years with the incandescence of pianist Daniil Trifonov." — The New York Times
The masterful baritone Matthias Goerne collaborates with pianist Daniil Trifonov on selected German lieder before being joined by the New York Philharmonic String Quartet in a performance of Hanns Eisler's Ernste Gesänge (Serious Songs), a piece in which "Goerne colors every word with insight and intensity" (BBC Magazine). Eisler said about this cycle, completed shortly before his death in 1962, "it is consciousness—reflection—depression—revival and again consciousness...one must describe the up and down of…actual situations, sing about them and comment on them." We may find shocking similarities between the situations on which Eisler commented, and those of our current age. The Quartet is then joined by Trifonov in Johannes Brahms' mighty Piano Quintet.
