Jack Quartet & Colin Currie, Percussion
Due to the coronavirus, please call to ensure this event is still happening before you leave home.
The JACK Quartet, called "superheroes of the new music world" (Boston Globe), join percussion superstar Colin Currie for two New York premieres and two works by Iannis Xenakis. Xenakis's groovy solo percussion piece Rebonds B, almost tribal in its utterance, revolutionized the solo percussion repertoire and pushes what is technically possible for the percussionist. Glissandi, tapping on wood and strings, and fugal patterns all are employed in Tetras, a singular masterpiece by one of the 20th century's most iconoclastic composers that was likewise revolutionary in the string quartet repertoire. Two New York premieres for percussion and string quartet comprise the rest of the program: Suzanne Farrin's flickering, luminous Hypersea, and a brand-new work by Andy Akiho, a "mold-breaking" (New York Times) composer and percussion maven.
