"Adaku's Revolt" at Abrons Arts Center
Presented as part of the TILT Kids Festival, in partnership with Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) "Adaku’s Revolt," created and performed by Okwui Okpokwasili and designed and directed by Peter Born, is an interdisciplinary performance about one young black girl’s revolt against normative standards of beauty: a revolt against normalizing the pain that one must endure to achieve conventional standards of beauty, against enduring the physical scarring that is an inevitable result of using chemical straighteners or iron hot combs, against accepting that her natural hair should be a source of humiliation, and against the insidious self-loathing that might seed itself in the fertile ground of that humiliation.
