Flowering Wound: Martha Naranjo Sandoval
Learn More |
"Flowering Wound" features a series of photographs taken between 2014 and 2023, beginning shortly after photographer Martha Naranjo Sandoval moved from Mexico City to New York City. These intimate images include members of her family set against scenic Mexican and American landscapes, like her husband, Dylan.
Beyond capturing her evolving life in Mexico and the United States, the pictures also highlight cultural nuances inherent to racial categories in both countries, underscoring the fundamental differences between the two. Through her photography, Naranjo Sandoval confronts the racial prejudices she continues to face in the United States, alongside those she endured growing up in Mexico, where she identified as café con leche, or “milk and coffee,” due to her mother being white and her father being dark-skinned.
