Tour the Historic Lawrence Cemetery
Bayside Historical Society is conducting a FREE guided tour of the historic Lawrence Cemetery, the burial ground of one of Bayside's founding families. The cemetery's first burial occurred in 1832, with the most recent in 1939. Notable individuals who are interred here include Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence, New York City's first popularly elected mayor, and Colonel Frederick Newbold Lawrence, former president of the New York Stock Exchange. In 1967, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Lawrence Cemetery as a landmark. History will come alive on our tour as our staff recounts the stories of different members of the Lawrence family.
Outside Meeting Location: The Lawrence Cemetery is located at the corner of 216th Street and 42nd Avenue in Bayside, Queens. Note: This tour will require walking on uneven ground and there are no restrooms on site.
