Bohemian National Hall 321 E 73rd St, New York

Conversation and Book Signing with Ruth Padel.

Ruth Padel’s unique poetry biography of Beethoven, hailed by The New York Times as ‘telling the composer’s life story more profoundly than most biographies’, is a lyrical journey through Beethoven’s life, feelings and music, tracing his thoughts through diaries, letters and sketch-books whilst re-tracing his steps, from Bonn to Vienna, Silesia and Prague, where he parted from his Immortal Beloved. Her prose coda of ‘Life-Notes’ illuminates the history. ‘Even these entries have poetic elegance,’ said The New York Times music critic. ‘Her imagery and imagination took me deeper into Beethoven than many biographies I’ve read.’ Padel, an award-winning British poet and scholar who has played viola in chamber music since childhood, will read and introduce poems that illuminate the life and thought behind Beethoven’s music, played by Quatuor Danel.

You can buy Ruth Padel’s book Beethoven’s Variations: Poems On a Life at the event.

Complimentary wine and cheese.
