Enjoy a tour and community-based artmaking activity with artists Steven and William Ladd inside their exhibition at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Transforming America through Art: A Vision for Brooklyn’s Community. Participants will learn from the artists about their tactile and textile-based work exploring identity, representation, memory, and belonging before jumping into a highly energized and interactive artmaking project inspired by their “scrollathon” project. Participants will respond to this prompt, “What one word best describes your hopes for the future?” and create a community art project that will remain on view as part of the exhibition. These sessions are designed for industry professionals working at and around the Brooklyn Navy Yard and open to anyone who is 18 years or older.

Transforming America features photographic reproductions of Brooklynites who, too, responded to the prompt above, and features work created by and with the Ladd brothers over the last decade. The vibrant and colorful work incorporates handcrafted techniques like sewing and beading, found objects and photographs. Participants in this program help the brothers as they prepare a larger commission for the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as part of their 250th anniversary celebration of the United States’ founding. Learn more about Steven and Williiam Ladd at StevenandWilliam.com.

This program is part of the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s ARTS Series. This series uses the arts as conduit for community engagement and activation. Inspired by the Yard’s rotating calendar of exhibitions and public art, this series celebrates the positive effect the arts have on community dialogue and community enrichment. Programs will be rooted in dialogue, exchange and collective artmaking and creation.
