The Mayor of MacDougal Street: A Celebration of Dave Van Ronk's Music
The Mayor of MacDougall Street: A Celebration of Dave Van Ronk's Music | Live at Cafe Wha? | Sunday, February 16th | 5PM Doors, 6PM Show
Van Ronk seemed ancient, battle-tested. Every night I felt like I was sitting at the feet of a timeworn monument. (…) Later, when I would record my first album, half the cuts on it were renditions of songs that Van Ronk did. (…) He was big, sky high and I looked up to him. He came from the land of giants. — Bob Dylan
Join us at Cafe Wha! on Sunday, February 16, from 6 PM to 8 PM, for "The Mayor of MacDougal Street: A Celebration of Dave Van Ronk's Music". This heartfelt tribute honors the life and legacy of Dave Van Ronk, the “Mayor of MacDougal Street,” whose towering figure, sardonic humor, and prodigal mentorship shaped the Greenwich Village folk revival and inspired countless artists. We will remember him with some of them, sharing stories, music, memories, and jokes.
Presented by Fabio Fantuzzi with David Massengil, Elijah Wald, and Chris Lowe
Guests:
Elijah Wald: Singer-songwriter, music historian, Grammy Award winner, and author of 13 books, including Dylan Goes Electric! and The Mayor of MacDougal Street, Elijah was a dear friend of Dave’s, whom he considers a mentor. David Massengill: American folk singer-songwriter, guitar and Appalachian dulcimer virtuoso, Massengill’s songs have been recorded by the likes of Joan Baez, The Roches, and Jack Hardy. Dave, who was a mentor for him, said that David is one of the very few who can “take the dull out of dulcimer.” Chris Lowe: Actor, singer-songwriter, and of folk and blues fingerpicking guitarist, Chris started out his music career publishing an album produced by Dave, who said that Chris writes songs “with a deftness that a novelist might envy.” Fabio Fantuzzi: Academic, curator, singer-songwriter, and author of various books including Bob Dylan and the Arts and Norman Raeben (1901-1978): The Wandering Painting, Fabio has written books, essays, and albums infused with folk and blues traces and Village stories. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to celebrate the timeless music and influence of Dave Van Ronk in the iconic setting of Cafe Wha! —one of the very places where Van Ronk made history.
