11-08-2019 12:00:00 11-08-2019 12:00:00 America/New_York The Art of Return | 3:30PM "Formerly incarcerated men and women present a night of art and story from inside the American criminal justice system. This year, over 600,000 people in the U.S. will return home from prison, with millions more spending time in jail. They are expected to contribute quickly to society to show they have been ""rehabilitated."" Yet instead of resources for success, society offers stigma, shadow, and a neverending maze of legal barriers. Part artistic showcase, part live interview, The Art of Return explores the incomparable experiences of incarceration and reentry. Join us for a night of visibility, creativity, and power. Allen Arthur is a freelance journalist based in Queens. A recent graduate of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, he has worked with the formerly incarcerated community for more than two years. His work has appeared in USA Today, the Marshall Project, and YES! Magazine. Darren Mack (special guest) - Darren Mack is an activist and advocate. Incarcerated for more than 20 years, Mack has since devoted himself to changing perceptions of those in the criminal justice system. He is an active member of JustLeadershipUSA, an organizer of the Close Rikers Campaign, and was a community organizing fellow for the New York Civil Liberties Union.
