Venue Description: One of the urban wonders of the world, Central Park consists of 843 acres of woodlands, lawns, and bodies of water. It was the first public park built in America and is entirely man-made. More than 25 million visitors a year enjoy the plethora of opportunities for relaxing, learning, playing, and exercising within Central Park's six-mile perimeter. At least ten different walking tours, custom van tours, and downloadable self-guided tours offer knowledge of the park's history and views of its most beautiful spots. The athletic visitor can enjoy 58 miles of pedestrian paths, 6.1 miles of bike drives, and designated fields and areas for horseback riding, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, soccer, football, fishing, birding, wall climbing, swimming, lawn bowling, croquet, handball, chess and checkers, paddleball, volleyball, model boat sailing, cross country skiing, and kite flying.

Ice skating is available at both Wollman Rink and Lasker Rink. The park becomes a showcase for artistic talents of all kinds during the summer. Shakespeare in the Park brings free performances to over 100,000 people at the Delacorte Theater.

SummerStage hosts outdoor concerts from both global and New York-based musical artists. The New York Philharmonic stops here on their Concerts in the Parks tour, as does the Metropolitan Opera during their Met in the Parks series.

For children's enjoyment, the park includes 21 playgrounds and numerous special events, camp activities, recreation programs, sports, free exhibits, and workshops. Tavern on the Green, which is located in the park, is one of the city's most renowned and well-known restaurants. It was originally the house of a shepherd and his flock, which roamed the aptly-named Sheep's Meadow, a present-day picnicking and Frisbee tossing area. Belvedere Castle, which was completed in 1872, was originally built to overlook the Croton Resevoir. The Resevoir has since been filled in, and is now the site of the Great Lawn.

Central Park opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 1:00 a.m., 365 days a year. For more information, call 212-310-6600 or visit www.centralparknyc.org.
