Hot Club: Jazz Listening Session
What is a Hot Club? Starting in the 1930s, "Hot Clubs" were a sort of "Book Club" for jazz listening - fans would get together to play records for each other. Today, the Neo Hot Club movement is about hearing classic and rare jazz records on their original 78RPM format, which offers the best sound possible. A community of jazz lovers is growing around these "Neo Hot Clubs," keeping alive the love of old recordings and swinging hot jazz. This session is led by esteemed jazz researcher and historian Ben Young. For our September Hot Club, we'll spend some quality time with choice examples from Count Basie's pre-war years, the mid-Forties signatures of tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet, and tip a cap toward John Coltrane as well. All three settled in Queens as their careers were kicking into high gear. While digging their masterpieces, we'll also consider the enigmatic ways their work interacted with the 78-rpm format--and of course with the flow of Jazz history. Goods sounds promised! Notice that we're meeting on a Sunday this time--12:30 to 2:30 as usual, with some open-spin time before and after to share the 78s you bring.
