Astro Live Series Continues with a Special Astronomy Night that Marks the Final Free Friday of the Season

The Intrepid Museum’s popular Free Friday series will conclude with a special in-person Astronomy Night, part of the ongoing Astro Live series, on Friday, September 27! From 5:00-9:00pm, visitors can enjoy extended Museum hours at no cost. Held at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue), Astronomy Night offers family-friendly programming, live demonstrations, space-themed activities, and engaging talks by former NASA astronauts.

During this special event, former NASA astronaut and author Tom Jones will discuss his latest book, Space Shuttle Stories: Firsthand Astronaut Accounts from All 135 Missions, in conversation with fellow former NASA astronauts Mike Massimino and Sidney M. Gutierrez. More information can be found here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/intrepid-museum-presents-astronomy-night-registration-927515091607?aff=oddtdtcreator

Please note: A limited number of books will be available to purchase onsite. However, visitors are strongly encouraged to purchase in advance. You can also purchase from our website (please allow for shipping time).

Astronomy Nights are FREE and feature fun, educational experiences for the entire family. Enjoy talks from astronauts as well as hands-on activities and demonstrations led by Museum educators. Local astronomers will also be on hand with high-powered telescopes to guide visitors through the night sky and answer questions about astronomy and stargazing. Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars or use the telescopes provided by the experts.

Doors will open promptly at 5:00pm, with last entry at 8:30pm. (Please note: doors may close earlier; entry is not guaranteed). All visitors must enter through the Welcome Center to receive a free ticket prior to entering the Museum.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available for the demonstration, featured speakers, and some of the educator cart.

Spanish language services will be available during the event, including interpretation for all presentations, activities, and discussions.

Astronomy Night is supported in part by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

About the Intrepid Museum The Intrepid Museum, a private non-profit, holds a special place in New York City’s cultural landscape. Founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the storied WWII aircraft carrier Intrepid—a National Historic Landmark and the centerpiece of its collection—the Museum welcomes over one million visitors annually from all around the world. Its mission is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through bold and immersive collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire future generations.

The Intrepid Museum’s dynamic exhibitions exemplify the intersection of history and innovation. Immersive fun, STEM and history are showcased through technological marvels such as Enterprise, the world’s first space shuttle, and Growler, the only nuclear-weapons-carrying submarine open to the public. The Museum’s one-of-a-kind experience also features dozens of military aircraft including fighter jets, a supersonic spy plane, and the Concorde, the world’s fastest commercial airliner, displayed in and around the legendary aircraft carrier, Intrepid, an awe-inspiring setting for an unforgettable adventure. But the true power of the Intrepid Museum extends beyond the mechanical marvels on display to all those whose stories of sacrifice, service and heroism bring history to life.
