Amina Figarova, an Azerbaijani jazz pianist, initially received training as a classical pianist in Baku. Her interest in local folk music led her to specialize in jazz later. Along with her husband, flutist Bart Platteau, she has been performing in jazz festivals globally since the late 1980s. Figarova showed a keen interest in music from a very young age and began composing at the tender age of six. She attended the Baku Academy of Music, where she received her classical concert pianist training. While performing at the Moscow Jazz Festival in 1988, she was invited to study at the Rotterdam Conservatoire, where her interest in jazz developed. She later completed her education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and while in the United States, she was associated with the Thelonious Monk Jazz Colony in Aspen, Colorado. After getting married to the flutist Bart Platteau, the talented musician Amina Figarova began performing jazz concerts globally, and her albums September Suite and Blue Whisper were partly inspired by the 9/11 attacks that she witnessed while playing at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York. Critic Neil Tesser considers her as one of the foremost contemporary jazz composers, with notable works like September Suite and Come Escape With Me. She has composed music for Diana and Tehora, the latter of which was written for Shlomit Butbul, an Israeli singer. Amina Figarova has released 13 albums, and she was recognized as one of DownBeat's Rising Star Composers for two consecutive years, 2014 and 2015.
