Virtual: The Art of the Synagogue Mosaic: The Jewish Zodiac
Explore the nuances of zodiac symbolism in Jewish synagogue mosaics on Wednesday, March 19th at 6pm ET with the Museum at Eldridge Street's Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Regina Stein.
The zodiac appears in synagogue mosaics in Israel as early as the fourth century C.E.—why? What does it represent? How could rabbis have prayed in a synagogue which so blatantly displayed this seemingly pagan symbol? These are some of the questions we will address as we think about Jewish art in antiquity and today.
