Dir. Frank Oz. 1997, 92 mins. 35mm. With Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack, Matt Dillon, Tom Selleck, Bob Newhart, Debbie Reynolds, Wilford Brimley. A small town in Indiana is thrown for a loop when beloved English high school teacher Howard Brackett (Kline) is “outed” as gay by a Hollywood actor (Dillon) during his Oscar acceptance speech. The only problem: Howard, planning his forthcoming wedding to fellow teacher Emily (Cusack), is not gay…or at least he’s not willing to admit it yet. Working from a witty, daring script from gay playwright and humor columnist Paul Rudnick, Oz’s comedy hit was something groundbreaking for the late nineties, a star-driven studio comedy that mocked the hetero world for its homophobic culture and celebrated the coming-out of its flustered hero. Scene-stealer Cusack received an Oscar nomination for her increasingly frenzied role as the neurotic fiancée.
