An Act of Worship
Dir. Nausheen Dadabhoy, 2022, 82 mins. U.S. DCP. Director Nausheen Dadabhoy holds a mirror to her experience as a Muslim American coming of age at the turn of the 21st century, and weaves her myriad reflections into a vibrant portrait of lives profoundly shaped by violent policy and perception in an increasingly Islamophobic dominant culture. The unfolding stories of Aber, Khadega, and Ameena are reinforced by people around the country who lent their voices, personal anecdotes, and home videos to broaden the film’s lens and provide a counterpoint to the narratives presented by news media and Hollywood alike. This ambitious, kaleidoscopic, and humanist film is a rich tapestry that defies reductive notions of the Muslim community by honoring its remarkable diversity.
The screening is part of our Welcome Ramadan Celebration and will be followed by a panel discussion about the state of representation of Muslims in media led by MoMI’s Neighborhood Council members Shireen Soliman and Daleelah Saleh with the director Nausheen Dadabhoy and curator of MoMI’s Infinite Beauty series Farihah Zaman.
