Yeats + Tagore: India Meets Ireland in America

On the eve of "The Great War," the first world war – a poet from India met a poet from Ireland in a spirit of peace and creativity. They were the great poets of their nations in their times: artists who expressed themselves not only in verse, but also in plays, in songs, in social service, in politics, and even in works of spirituality and philosophy. Join us for this performance-collage, featuring a concert-reading from Yeats' one-act play of the Irish legend, The Only Jealousy of Emer, and the premiere of a new American stage-recital of the classic Tagore dramatic-poem of Indian mythology, Chitra. Live music will include acapella renderings from Lou Harrison's little known score for Yeats' play, Ravi Shankar's "The Enchanted Dawn" and archival audio of Shankar from the Library's collection. Our gifted performers will include Irish and Bengali musicians, dancers from the Ayana Arts South Asian Collective, members of the Barnard/Columbia Theatre Arts program and actors of Greenwich Village's Jumble Shop Theater. This event is presented, in collaboration with the American Irish Historical Society, as part of Carnegie Hall's city-wide festival "Migrations: The Making of America."
