Using poetic storytelling, While We Were Sleeping illuminates human rights abuses around the world. The show includes work by spoken word artists Tara Bracco, Philippe Garcesto, Karla Jackson-Brewer, Shane Michael Manieri, Shetal Shah, Natalia Vargas-Caba, and Kesav Wable. This show, directed by Ben Arredondo, first premiered to a packed house at the International Human Rights Art Festival. For 15 years, Poetic People Power has been combining art and social change. The project educates and engages audiences on social and political topics through the expressive art of poetry. In this show, the group turns its attention to the injustices and human rights violations happening around the world including sex trafficking in NYC, honor killings in the UK, government sanctioned killings in the Philippines, the food crisis in Venezuela, the war on women's bodies in the Congo, and the abusive treatment of gay people in Uganda.
