Poets House presents a reading of July 27 from Bernadette Mayer’s Memory by poet Simone White. The reading will be streamed on Monday July 27th at 3:00 PM EST and will be available on the Poets House Instagram page, YouTube channel, and website. Simone White is the author of the full-length collection House Envy of All the World (2010) and the chapbooks Dolly (2008) and Unrest (2013). White has received fellowships from Cave Canem and was selected as a New American Poet for the Poetry Society of America. She is completing a PhD in English at the CUNY Graduate Center and lives in Brooklyn, New York. This virtual reading is part of the Language is a Temptation series of daily readings throughout the month of July.

Throughout July, Poets House and Siglio Press has embarked on a month long daily experiment: a passage from the corresponding day in 1971 will be read by poets, writers, critics, and artists, as a parallel durational work that celebrates the new publication of Bernadette Mayer’s Memory, which brings together the full sequence of images and text for the first time in book form.

And at 7:00 PM EST author Lauren Francis-Sharma will read from her epic novel Book of the Little Axe, and will be joined in conversation with fellow author Krystal Sital. Lauren Francis-Sharma is the author of Book of the Little Axe (May, 2020) and ‘Til the Well Runs Dry, which debuted in 2014 and was short-listed for the William Saroyan International Prize, awarded the Honor Fiction Prize by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. ‘Til the Well Runs Dry was also chosen as an O, The Oprah Magazine Summer Reading Pick and lauded by the New York Times, USA Today, Essence Magazine, and People Magazine amongst other publications.

Founded by two-time U.S. Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz and legendary arts administrator Elizabeth Kray, Poets House serves as a home for all who read and write poetry. In 2009, Poets House moved into its permanent home at 10 River Terrace in Battery Park City on the banks of the Hudson River where, last year, 80,000 people walked through its doors, and more than five million were introduced to Poets House through its new website and national partnerships. 2017 marks the 30th Anniversary Celebration of this landmark institution.
