LIGHT YEAR 71: “Digital Fairy Tales: Water Stories”
Due to the coronavirus, please call to ensure this event is still happening before you leave home.
View Website |
The international debut of “Digital Fairy Tales: Water Stories” takes inspiration from German folk tales collected by Franz Xaver von Schoenwerth—a civil servant and archivist—in the mid-19th century. In these fairytales, giants and water people cavort with peasants, royalty and crafty creatures in underwater worlds, castles and forests. Contemporary creatives have brought these stories into a new era and offer a unique opportunity to look back in time through their varied lenses.
Digital Fairy Tales: Water Stories is curated by Leo Kuelbs and features work by Jonathan Phelps, Daniela Imhoff, Juliane Pieper with Chantelle Fuoco, Tom Rotenberg, Jim Ellis, Richard Jochum with Theory, Vadim Schaeffler with Alex Hamadey, and Julia Obst with Mark Fernyhough, with translations by Sanjana Nair and Nicole Callihan Hefner.
Each LIGHT YEAR video art installation is also available to stream online at https://www.facebook.com/lightyeararts from 2pm to 10pm on its scheduled projection day, and at dusk, the works can also be viewed online in real time from the projection site also at https://www.facebook.com/lightyeararts.
Since its launch in 2015, LIGHT YEAR has hosted the work of hundreds of artists and curators from around the world. LIGHT YEAR’s collaborators—Leo Kuelbs, John Ensor Parker, and Glowing Bulbs—are based in Dumbo, and have been a part of almost every major projection event that has taken place on the Manhattan Bridge since 2010. Originally created in celebration of the United Nations’ declaration of 2015 as the Year of Light and Light Art, LIGHT YEAR has become an international project, with presentations in DUMBO on the First Thursday of every month, as well as in Berlin, and live streamed online.
LIGHT YEAR is presented in collaboration with the Dumbo Improvement District, and NYC DOT Art.
