Out in the Open | Queer Poets & Writers at the Pier
Join the American LGBTQ+ Museum in partnership with Nuyorican Poets Café for an evening of creativity, expression, and solidarity; a testament to the power of art and storytelling within the LGBTQ+ community; a platform for voices to be heard, celebrated, and remembered against the backdrop of the historic NYC piers.
Featuring:
Host/MC | La Bruja Featured Poets | Emanuel Xavier and Roya Marsh Music | DJ Luna Rósa
Part 1: Workshop with Najee Omar | 5:00p - 6:30p
Gather with us under the open sky, where the Hudson River whispers tales of resilience and joy. Led by poet Najee Omar, this workshop welcomes writers of all backgrounds to explore the profound legacy of those who paved the way. Drawing inspiration from luminaries like Audre Lorde, Miguel Algarín, and personal ancestors, we'll delve into their words as a catalyst for our own creative expressions.
Through guided meditation and reflective writing exercises, we will honor the triumphs of queer forebears. We'll celebrate their courage and envision futures shaped by their dreams. Together, we will craft verses that weave personal narratives with collective histories, honoring each unique voice as a beacon in our poetic constellation.
Join us as we reclaim space, sharing our poems like offerings upon the water's edge. Let our words create ripples that echo across generations, resonating with the spirit of pride and belonging that defines us all.
Writing materials will be provided. Please bring your own blankets and chairs to be seated on the lawn area during this program.
Part 2: Open Mic with Nuyorican Poets Café | 7:00p - 9:00p
The workshop will then transition into an open mic session. Hosted by representatives from the iconic Nuyorican Poets Café, known for its celebration of diverse voices and artistic expression, the open mic segment invites participants to share the poems they crafted during the workshop in Part 1.
LGBTQ+ poets and writers from the NYC poetry community are also invited to perform alongside workshop participants, adding layers of depth and variety to the evening's artistic offerings. The open mic is not just a showcase of talent but a celebration of LGBTQ+ voices, stories, and resilience.
Throughout the program, the pier serves as more than just a backdrop; it becomes a symbol of openness and acceptance.
