Poster House First Friday
Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will host its monthly “First Friday” event October 6, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Poster House, 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. On the first Friday of every month, Poster House offers free admission and extended hours for guests to come explore the museum’s latest exhibitions. The two main exhibitions currently on display for the fall season are Art Deco: Commercializing the Avant-Garde and We Tried to Warn You! Environmental Crisis Posters, 1970-2020. Both exhibits will be open through February 25, 2024. Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities such as tours, workshops, performances, and activities, to further engage visitors with the exhibitions. First Friday Activities for October 6th include: • 3:00 – 5:00 PM: Print your own silkscreen poster with Mike King, the world’s most prolific gig poster artist! This limited–edition poster designed by King advertises Poster House’s newest exhibitions Art Deco: Commercializing the Avant-Garde and We Tried to Warn You! Environmental Crisis Posters, 1970–2020. • 5:00 PM: Jason Smith, New York Restoration Project’s Director of Northern Manhattan Parks, will present a consideration of posters, policy, and on-the-ground efforts to manage New York City’s open spaces to mitigate climate change and support biodiversity in Manhattan’s largest remaining wetland. • 6:00 PM: Join teaching artist Katherine Touhky for this interactive printmaking workshop inspired by Art Deco: Commercializing the Avant-Garde. Participants will use bold, geometric shapes and patterns to make their own Art Deco-inspired prints. No prior experience necessary; all skill levels welcome! • 7:00 PM: Celebrate the Earth with artist and climate activist Ceci Pineda! Ceci Pineda (they/them) is a brown, queer musician, ecosystem caretaker, and facilitator living between the northeast and Puerto Rico. A singer, guitarist, and jaranere, Ceci writes music for Tlalli (earth, land, and soil), our more-than-human relationships, and dreaming of climate justice worlds. Ceci will share songs that reflect upon the current environmental moment and invite participants into dreaming other ways of relating.
