Poster House First Friday
Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will host its monthly “First Friday” event February 7, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Poster House, 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. On the first Friday of every month, Poster House offers free admission and extended hours for guests to come explore the museum’s latest exhibitions. The two main exhibitions currently on display for the fall season are Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes and Lester Beall & A New American Identity. Both exhibits are open through February 23, 2025.
Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities such as tours, workshops, performances, and activities, to further engage visitors with the exhibitions. First Friday activities for February 7th include:
• 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Fabric Collage Workshop
Artist Mahdiyyah will lead a upcycled textiles collage-poster workshop inspired from Poster House’s exhibition Fantastical Streets: The Theatrical Posters of Boris Bućan. The workshop will explore how color, form, and symbolism can convey powerful message. Participants will learn a range of textile manipulation, patchwork, and collage techniques.
• 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Lester Beall Curatorial Tour
Join Poster House for a curatorial tour of acclaimed exhibition Lester Beall & A New American Identity, the first to display all three of the poster series that Beall created for the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) over a five-year span during the New Deal era. Questions strongly encouraged!
• 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Mixed Media Portrait Workshop
Jara Montez, a Brooklyn-based artist and educator, will lead a mixed media portrait workshop where participants will learn to craft intentional, mixed-media collages that capture the essence of their chosen subjects. Participants are encouraged to bring an image to use as a reference or to incorporate into their portraits.
• 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM: He Got Game Movie Screening
Join Poster House for a screening of the acclaimed 1998 classic film “He Got Game” by Spike Lee! Presented in conjunction with Poster House’s acclaimed exhibition Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes,
• 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Brooklynettes Performance
Poster House will welcome The Brooklynettes for a pumped-up performance presented in honor of Poster House’s exhibition Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes.
