The 2023 DxD theme is Hidden in Plain Sight: The intention of most datasets is to tell a story about the collective: they are designed, collected, and analyzed with a question about “the whole” in mind, smoothing over individualities and compacting lived experiences into a singular tale of “us.” This year we feature work that explores the smaller stories and voices that are hidden by this wider narrative as told by big data. We invited artists to complicate data trends and commonly held narratives, search for missing people/places/things in data, investigate anomalies and outliers, and draw back the curtain on the “invisible hands” that shape data to expose, question and engage the perspective and motives behind data collection.

Data Through Design (DxD) is an independent, volunteer-run collective which organizes an annual art exhibition featuring works that creatively analyze, interpret and interrogate data made available on NYC Open Data - a valuable civic resource aimed at increasing information access and transparency. Every contribution to Data Through Design goes to supporting our artists, the venue, and keeping our events free and open to the public. DxD's annual exhibition is part of NYC Open Data Week and is sponsored by the NYC Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) and Prime Produce.
