Due to the coronavirus, please call to ensure this event is still happening before you leave home.
View Website |
Rockefeller Center’s new public art initiative The Flag Project, featuring 192 newly designed flags showcasing New Yorkers’ love for their City, will be displayed as a temporary exhibition, flown from the iconic flagpoles surrounding The Rink at Rockefeller Center (located between 49th-50th Streets and 5th- 6th Avenues, Manhattan) from Saturday, August 1st through Sunday, August 16th.
The flags were selected as part of a design challenge where New Yorkers were invited to submit designs that celebrate New York City’s diverse culture, vibrant energy, strength and resiliency. The winning submissions from the public will be accompanied by works created by a number of notable New York artists including Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Christian Siriano, Sarah Sze, Steve Powers, KAWS, Laurie Anderson, Hank Willis Thomas, Carmen Herrera, Jenny Holzer, Shantell Martin, Sanford Biggers, and Faith Ringgold.
“The Flag Project” aims to unite and celebrate New York City’s community during, and in response to this difficult time. For most of the year, the flags surrounding the Rink at Rockefeller Center represent the nations recognized by the United Nations. For special occasions, all of the flags are uniform, such as American flags on the Fourth of July, rainbow flags during the annual Pride celebration, and silver and gold flags during the holiday season.
