All are welcome to a communal sing of timeless and powerful songs such as "O, Freedom," "Steal Away," "Deep River" and many more. The tradition of singing spirituals at St. George's began with African-American composer, arranger and baritone Harry Thacker Burleigh (1866-1949), a soloist at St. George's for over fifty years. His appointment was the "first known instance of an African American being admitted to a vested choir of a white parish." Burleigh went on to become the first African-American composer acclaimed for his art songs, and for his arrangements of spirituals.
