Central City Chorus presents "Make We Joy: An Elizabethan Christmas"
Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) and Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) are both counted among Britain’s greatest monarchs. Their reigns spanned a combined 115 years through some of the most defining years in world history. Along with their many accomplishments as monarchs on the throne, they both reigned during a flourish of musical creativity. Our concert celebrates the music of these golden ages, featuring music of select composers from both reigns. Among the several composers of the first Elizabethan age presented, the music of William Byrd (c. 1540-1623) and Thomas Weelkes (1576-1623) will be highlighted on their 400th death anniversary. Composers Ralph Vaughan Williams, William Walton, Benjamin Britten and David Willcocks will be featured, representing the choral art that flourished under the reign of the recent Elizabeth II.
