Movement, The Arts, & Well-being: an art exhibition that focuses on movement and dance. Moving For Life, the non-profit dance organization located on LES at 55 Avenue C, is hosting the work of 5 diverse artists who all have a relationship to Moving For Life, dance or somatic movement.
The show includes the Chinese line paintings of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen & Nature Being Art photography of Jamie McHugh, (both dancers and somatic movement therapists), the dance rehearsal art of WPA Artist Agnes Mills, and the Vespers watercolors with pen and ink of yoga teacher Chelsea Rushton. The show is proud to have received the advisement of Christine Irvin, Co-Director of the Stamford Art Association, 5013c, and the art collector Hugh Wilson. The closing reception is a free event on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 5:00-8:00 pm with pop-up movement, interviews and performances with Martha Eddy, Lynn Lesniak Needle, and others. Lynn Lesniak Needle, a member of the Nikolais company in the 1980’s, will also share stories from the time that Agnes Mills was present at their rehearsals. Proceeds/donations will fund Moving for Life’s free dance and wellness programs that take place in neighborhoods in need in all five boroughs. Established as a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization in 2014, Moving For Life has been providing over 70 free classes a month to older adults as well as to people of all ages who deal with cancer and have little access to gyms, dance classes, or professional exercise guidance. Moving For Life recently moved to the Lower East Side to a wheelchair accessible storefront, and established Studio 55C; a home for somatic movement. The studio has now expanded its activities to include a forum for the visual as well as for the performing arts featuring wellness and artistic expression. We wish to extend our gratitude to the individual artists and the volunteers who help to make our Studio55C art shows possible. The Studio 55C Gallery is open; Mon/Wed/Thursday from 11:00 am-3:00 pm, Tuesday evenings from 3-7pm, and Saturday/Sunday by appointment. Admission is free.
