At the time of its release, Stormy Weather (1943) was considered one of the best films featuring leading African-American performers, during an era when African-American performers rarely appeared in lead roles in mainstream Hollywood. Starring the incomparable Lena Horne, the film is based on the life of Bill "BoJangles" Robinson, who plays the character modeled after himself, and features Cab Calloway and Thomas 'Fats' Waller. Writer Gail Lumet Buckley is the daughter of Lena Horne and author of The Black Calhouns: From Civil War to Civil Rights with One African American Family. Following the screening, she will discuss the life her legendary mother with film historian Foster Hirsch.
