The Isaac Bell House Restoration and Legacy at The National Arts Club
Isaac Bell House was completed in 1883 from the designs of New York-based firm McKim, Mead, and White. The house remains one of the best surviving examples of shingle-style architecture in the country, and its innovative floorplan and architectural features have inspired generations of architects. The discussion will survey the house from the perspective of the original designers, examine its significance across time, and detail recent restorative work completed by its current stewards, the Preservation Society of Newport County’s collection. The panelist are Morrison Heckscher, Curator Emeritus of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Richard Guy Wilson, Professor Emeritus, Architectural History, at the University of Virginia; and David Scott Parker, FAIA, principal of David Scott Parker Architects. The panel will be moderated by Leslie Jones, Director of Museum Affairs and Chief Curator for The Preservation Society of Newport County.
