90 years ago, Alfred Emmanuel Smith, governor of the State of New York, made history as the first Catholic major party presidential nominee. Although Smith would lose the election to Herbert Hoover, and neither party would nominate a Catholic until John Kennedy's successful run, his legacy as "the happy warrior" looms large in American politics as a man who had strong faith in God and country.
