Rabbinic commentators affirm that Moses was the author and explain the many repetitions, inconsistencies and contradictions with midrash (interpretive explanations). Modern scholars respond with a critical, historical reading of the text, identifying four primary sources or author schools—E, J, P and D. The composition, today's scholars posit, was gradual, with various segments being written in response to historical circumstances and changing theological world views. In this class, we will unravel and examine these strands with a view toward understanding how a critical reading—one that recognizes the multiplicity of voices inherent in the text's construction—enriches our insight into the Bible's profound and compelling messages, without undermining its authority or divinity. http://www.cityguideny.com/eventinfo.cfm?id=254667 The Temple Emanu-El Skirball Center The Temple Emanu-El Skirball Center
