The Future of New York City’s Landmarks: A 60th Anniversary Talk on Preservation and Transformation at The Temple Emanue-El Streicker Cultural Center
Walk through nearly any neighborhood in New York City, and the past inevitably collides with the future, as the city constantly reshapes itself. Today, 158 historic districts, 1,464 individual landmarks, 123 interior landmarks, and 12 scenic landmarks hold protected status under New York City legislation. To mark the 60th anniversary of the law that made this possible, American preservationist and historian Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel has brought together leading architecture critics, engineers, landscape architects, historians, and scholars to examine the city’s evolving landscape and future. Join Adam Gopnik, Paul Goldberger, Justin Davidson, Vishaan Chakrabarti, and Lisa Switkin for a conversation moderated by Rea Hederman, Publisher of The New York Review of Books, exploring the impact, legacy, and future of historic preservation — a reflection on New York’s complex past and an invitation to imagine its ever-changing future.
