Survival Piece #5: Portable Orchard
"Survival Piece #5: Portable Orchard" is the first solo museum presentation of the indoor citrus grove conceived and designed by artists Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison in 1972. It explores the need for a productive and sustainable food system, envisioning a future where natural farming practices are obsolete. Spanning the museum’s eighth-floor gallery, this installation of eighteen live citrus trees is rooted in self-contained planters with individual lighting systems. This represents a survivalist alternative in the face of environmental disarray.
Admission is free every Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm or on the second Sunday of the month.
