SHAB-E-TAJ: Indian Classical Music Odyssey in Memory of Ustad Vilayat Khan Based on the 1967 musical album, A NIGHT AT THE TAJ, the South Asian Music & Arts Association (SAMAA) proudly presents SHAB-E-TAJ, a musical odyssey in memory of Ustad Vilayat Khan, an Indian classical sitar player who passed away in 2004 at the age of 75. The concert, taking place on Sunday, March 22, 2020, from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Town Hall in Manhattan (123 W 43rd, between Broadway and 6th Avenue), will feature the who's who of Indian classical music, including TM Krishna (vocalist), Hidayat Husain Khan (sitarist and youngest son of Vilayat Khan), Danish Husain (storyteller) and Marina Ahmad (Hindustani vocalist), among others.

In the legendary 1967 musical album, Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Imrat Khan answer the age-old question: what would we do if we had one more day with the person we love? Vilayat Khan voices Queen Mumtaz on his sitar and Imrat Khan replies as Shah Jahan from the deep notes of his surbahar. The final conversation between the Sultan and his Queen comes to life, as the dewdrops dry and the gift of timelessness fades with the rising sun.

"At our concert, we hope to relive that magical night, as we experience exhilarating musical renditions and jugalbandis, interspersed with storytelling and conversations, in the environment of an intimate mehfil-baithak, which will give rise to the most unique theatrical experience," said Simmi Chopra Bhatia, Founder and Executive Director of SAMAA. "Like the album, 'A Night At The Taj,' this will ALSO be a night to remember." *For more information about the concert and to purchase tickets, please visit www.samaa.us
