On Ash Wednesday, Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Church’s Bishop Paul Egensteiner  will distribute ashes outdoors and attend a lunch for hundreds in the community and asylum seekers on February 14, 2024 from 11 am to noon at Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish, located at 602 E. 9th Street, New York, NY.

The lunch will be hosted by Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish and provided by Trinity Services and Food for the Homeless.  Trinity’s Services and Food for the Homeless program has operated a soup kitchen Mondays to Fridays each week for more than 40 years.  The program has ramped up its efforts to keep up with the increased demand from the community and asylum seekers from West African countries like Mauritania, Senegal, and the Gambia.

“A critical mission of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church is our commitment to providing support to the communities we serve,” said Bishop Egensteiner.   “Our Ash Wednesday celebration and the lunch program at Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish is yet another way for us to provide the support needed by our Lower East Side community- many of whom are asylum seekers and/ or are homeless. We celebrate inclusivity and service to our community, and this Ash Wednesday celebration is in keeping with our mission,” he added.
