Signs of Compassion
“Signs of Compassion” photo exhibition celebrating American Sign Language and Braille showing at the United Nations, New York, October 10th - November 20th 2023

Signs of Compassion, a unique collection of animated photographs celebrating the beauty of American Sign Language, and an interactive Braille sculpture will be displayed at the United Nations in New York City.
The mixed media exhibition contains a collection of 30 black and white animated photographs showing a diverse group of people using American Sign Language to sign the 30 words of an Emily Dickinson poem. The subjects in the photos are a diverse mix of people of all ages, genders, ethnicities and abilities. They include writers, artists, activists, healers, performers and musicians from America, Asia, South America, Africa and Eastern Europe.
The exhibition also includes two spinnable mantra wheels with a Braille version of the poem embossed upon it. The entire exhibit is wheelchair accessible.
The installation is a collaboration between Miggs Burroughs and Mark Yurkiw. Miggs Burroughs is a fine artist and designer based in Westport, Connecticut. His photography and illustrations have graced the covers of multiple national and international magazine covers including TIME Magazine. His designs have appeared on a U.S. Postage Stamp, and on posters for the American Red Cross and Save the Children. Miggs work has been collected by institutions, museums and private collectors around the world, Mark Yurkiw is an artist and inventor also from Westport, Connecticut. A sculptor who trained as a scientist Mark created Fireflies, the world’s first solar powered Lighthouse in New York Harbor created to teach children to do creative things with renewable energy. His sculpture of a huddled Statue of Liberty helped to collect over 2 million coats for lower income and homeless people in New York Signs of compassion will run from October 10th, 2023 to Nov 20, 2023 at the United Nations. Visitor entrance at 1st Avenue between 45th and 46th street, New York. Entry is free and doors are open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
