In a 2019 research study of 16 commonly used curricula and book lists from Pre-K to eighth grade, the Coalition for Educational Justice found that 1,003 books (83%) of the 1,025 books analyzed were written by white authors – nearly five times more books than all authors of color combined.

EEAPC is committed to bringing culturally relevant books and learning resources to New York City students. On Saturday, June 17, 2023, EEAPC will launch the Black Studies: An Education for Me + You Bookmobile to distribute free books to the Queens community. This special initiative will give Pre-K-8th grade students access to age-appropriate books to foster identity, highlight the Black experience, and encourage reading and learning. The event will include an EEAPC-branded bus parked at 94-20 Guy R Brewer Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11451. The bus would be stationed from 10:30am-2:30pm in this location, allowing community residents to briefly enter and engage with the Black Studies-themed interior before exiting through the back of the vehicle to receive a book and take a photo. The event goals are to spread the word about the Black Studies curriculum being piloted by the Education Equity Action Plan Coalition (information on the organization below) and increase excitement and curiosity around Black literature. The bus is also envisioned as an opportunity to generate further excitement for the Black Studies curriculum and will be “trackable” in real-time by interested audience members who would like to follow its route online via the EEAPC bookmobile website (https://www.eeapcoalition.org/bookmobile).

About the EEAPC: The Education Equity Action Plan Coalition (EEAPC) was founded in 2021 to develop the first Pre-K-12 Black Studies curriculum for New York City schools. With 1 million students in over 1800 schools in New York City, the coalition is pioneering the integration of Black Studies into American History and Social Studies pedagogy for the nation’s largest public school system. As a group of educators, nonprofits, and government officials, the EEAPC is leveraging the numerous foundations laid by Black Studies advocates for more than a half-century.

The Education Equity Action Plan Coalition consists of six core partners working in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE): Black Edfluencers United (BE-U), The Association of Black Educators of New York (ABENY), The Black Education Research Center (BERC) at Teachers College, Columbia University, The City Council’s Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus (BLAC), The Eagle Academy Foundation (EAF) and United Way of New York City (UWNYC).

EEAPC is funded by the New York City Council Black, Latino and Asian Caucus.
