Park Avenue Armory invites audiences experience, create, and share hands-on artworks at Skillshare: Art and Mutual Aid in These Times, Sunday, August 21, 2022 as part of the Making Space at the Armory Public Programming Series. Inspired by the tradition of artists helping artists, artists from across the Armory offer opportunities for those in attendance to explore dance, poetry, music, and more in activations hosted by a range of Armory artists and partners. This event holds space for artists and audiences to connect, collaborate, and rediscover what it means to create in community after such a long period of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Armory’s historic second-floor company rooms, Armory Artists-in-Residence Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray and Carmelita Tropicana open their studios to the public, showcasing their work, highlighting the work of fellow artists, and offering workshops to audiences. Armory Education Teaching Artists and Youth Corps lead “articipatory” creative workshops, inviting participants to experience first-hand the creative process-driven and multi-disciplinary teaching style central to Armory Arts Education initiatives, contributing to an ephemeral communal work of art. Other participants include National Black Theatre, performance artist and musician Karen Finley, cellist and artist Ethan Philbrick, jazz and world music singer Kavita Shah, jazz pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist and composer Linda May Han Oh, visual art performance warrior Cassils, interdisciplinary filmmaker Ela Troyano, and martial arts instructor and coach Kristen Cabildo.

Drawing on the collaborative nature of the event, Columbia University Professor Jack Halberstam and Racial Justice Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia Law School’s Initiative for a Just Society Che Gossett close Skillshare with a roundtable discussion focusing on the state of mutual aid and the arts communities in New York, the US, and globally. Also participating in the discussion are costume designer and founder of Black Trans Liberation Qween Jean and actor and founder of Anticapitalism for Artists Chris Myers.
