MGMT Live at the Guggenheim Nov. 10 & 11

October 12, 2011 - by CG News Desk

The Guggenheim Museum will present a unique musical performance by the rock band MGMT at the after-party for the annual Guggenheim International Gala on Thursday, November 10, 2011, held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on the occasion of the exhibition Maurizio Cattelan: All. A second MGMT performance at the museum will take place on Friday, November 11, 2011.

The 2011 Guggenheim International Gala will celebrate the retrospective Maurizio Cattelan: All, in which the artist's entire body of work will be suspended en masse from the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda in a provocative, site-specific installation. With over 130 artworks on view from the rotunda floor and from varying heights of the museum ramps, the exhibition offers a dramatic setting for guests at the Guggenheim International Gala and at the MGMT events.

In anticipation of the performance, MGMT said, "We're creating a musical experience that works for the building, and for the construction and presentation of the Cattelan exhibition. The art exhibition is done in a completely original way, so it deserves music which is completely original. The Guggenheim performance won't be a traditional MGMT show, but it will be ____."

A preview video of the band members is available on guggenheim.org/mgmt. The MGMT performance is produced by Bronwyn Keenan, Director of Special Events, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Sam Brumbaugh, Special Events Consultant, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

About MGMT
MGMT co-founders, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, met at Wesleyan University in 2001. Their debut album, Oracular Spectacular (2008), released through Columbia Records, garnered the band three Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. The "musically adventurous" eclectic mix of tracks that comprise Congratulations (2010) demonstrate MGMT's unconventional pop structures. The album debuted at #2 on the US Billboard 200 and #4 in the UK, and received tremendous popular acclaim. Performing live as a five piece band, MGMT continue to entertain through television appearances, including a spot on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon this past September performing Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," frequent performances at music festivals around the globe, and projects such as a recent edition of the LateNightTales music compilation. Ben and Andrew are currently at work on the third MGMT album.
