How to Shop New York's Best Home-Grown Designers

The February 2016 edition of New York Fashion Week—or rather the beginning of Fashion Month—is now upon us. Prepare for an onslaught of stylish bloggers strategically mugging for street style photogs, and editors hopping over slushy snow piles in ankle boots. This season also marks the beginning of a wider change in the fashion industry as some designers (i.e.: Rebecca Minkoff) elect to show collections currently available in stores, while others have dropped off the runway entirely (ahem, Tom Ford). Nonetheless, NYC promises to be taken over by fashion mania: Kanye showcasing his Yeezy collection alongside a rumored 1,000 extras at Madison Square Garden, Rihanna’s debut show for Puma, and many parties promising a velvet rope and Champagne galore upon entry. To get in the NYFW spirit we scoured the city’s stores for goods by some of our favorite NYC-based designers. Slip on one of these pieces from the spring 2016 collections as you prepare to take in the fall 2016 shows.

  DKNY

1.) Quintessential NYC-brand DKNY got an infusion of street-style cred last fall when Public School designers debuted their first collection for the revered brand. Pieces like this classic shirtdress are a must-have. It’s printed with an iconic Peter Lindbergh image from the company’s 1994 campaign.

Joseph Altuzarra

2.) Everything Joseph Altuzarra designs is coveted by women the world over. His foray into handbags has not disappointed. His signature is gorgeous, supple leather and oversized fringe detailing. Consider this beauty the perfect AM to PM city bag.

 Rag & Bone

3.) For over a decade Rag & Bone has carved out a space in the Manhattan fashion landscape, and in girls’ closets. Known for their brilliant fitting denim, this spring they added staples that will perfectly pair with their blue jeans. Think sleepwear-inspired silk tops rendered in black-and-white stripes.

 Derek Lam

4.) Derek Lam is a genius at crafting feminine clothes imbued with a modern sensibility. While his ready-to-wear is a staple on models and editors alike, his shoes are practically de rigueur for walking the city blocks. Spring’s lace-up booties offer just the right hint of skin along with a comfy under-3-inch heel.

 Diane Von Furstenberg

5.) The model-of-the-moment Karlie Kloss opened Diane von Furstenberg’s spring runway show in this dress. It’s the perfect mix of charming prints and figure-flattering fit. The wrap dress silhouette has been a mainstay in von Furstenberg’s designs since the 1970s.

Jennifer Fisher

6.) Stylist-cum-jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher has had her wares worn by everyone from Rihanna to Sarah Jessica Parker. Her swerving, minimalist designs in silver and 14k gold (as in the Abstract Line Cuff above) are the perfect accessories to wear this season and all year long.

 Tory Burch

7.) Though Tory Burch is a city girl through and through (a resident of the Upper East Side’s Pierre Hotel, no less), she knows how to both take a vacation and dress for one. Her current collection is filled with dreamy cotton ponchos equipped with embroidery and bohemian tassels.

 Alexander Wang

8.) Boy-about-town Alexander Wang just celebrated his tenth anniversary and clearly is moving full steam ahead into the next decade. Everything he touches turns to gold, and thereby is lusted after by both models and us regular folk alike. His newest sandals boldly mix silver buckles and a serrated rubber bottom—just the thing to walk in all spring and summer long.

Michael Kors

9.) Without a doubt, Michael Kors has become one of the greatest living American designers. He hails from Long Island and worked his way up the New York fashion food chain with his design brilliance and charismatic charm. Every wardrobe deserves a Kors trench—this one is made in a beautiful camel hue and features oversized pockets and a belted waist.

The Row

10.) Simple yet ridiculously stylish pretty much sums up everything Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row design. Their newest silk-satin wristlet is ideal for evenings out or days strolling around town, and comes with a delightful ombré pink tassel.
