Jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae, or the classics ? New York City venues feature music from all cultures. Whether you're catching an aria at Lincoln Center, or checking out a band at Central Park Summerstage, NYC has a gig you won't want to miss.

Strung Out - Highline Ballroom
August 04, 2012 -

This summer, legendary punk rock outfit Strung Out will get Twisted in a Suburban Wasteland on a tour stretching throughout the US and Canada. The band will perform both of its most notable albums -- Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues (1996) and Twisted By Design (1998) -- in their entirety during each show. "It feels right to do one last retrospective before we head into the making of another album. I think people will really enjoy these older songs played back to back," says lead vocalist Jason Cruz.

Amadou & Mariam / Theophilus London - SummerStage
August 04, 2012 -

The world of Amadou & Mariam is a musical sphere that stretches from the dusty streets of Mali to playing at Coachella and Lollapalooza. Their unique mix of unforgettable pop melodies and contagious rhythms, driven by Amadou's bluesy electric guitar and the compelling interplay of their two voices may have its roots deeply planted in Africa, yet this music effortlessly transcends classification. As popular across Africa as it is in Europe and America, critically acclaimed albums such as Dimanche a Bamako, Welcome to Mali and their newest, Folila, have taken Amadou & Mariam on an epic journey that has made the couple one of the best-selling acts to come out of Africa. Their friend Theophilus London, who appears on Folila (along with Santigold, TV on the Radio and others), joins them on the bill.

Jackson Browne - Beacon Theatre
Through August 04, 2012 - New York

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne is set to hit the stage on August 3rd and 4th at New York's famed Beacon Theatre. Playing guitar and piano, Jackson will perform songs from his entire body of work, with varying set lists each night. Singer-songwriter and fiddle player Sara Watkins will open the Acoustic Tour as a special guest.

MILLIE JACKSON - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
August 04, 2012 - New York

Millie Jackson is much more than an entertainment legend. The shapely, charismatic, and multi-talented entertainer is, without a doubt, a music industry icon whose oft-criticized career paved the way for many of today's forward-thinking female recording artists and entertainers. Not only has her lengthy career attracted fans from all walks of life along the way - it's also rumored that Bette Midler and Roseanne took pages from Jackson's high-voltage explicit approach to sex to enrich their respective careers. In spite of being stamped bawdy, brash, and bad, Jackson is the epitome of performance perfection on stage. In this regard, she is totally peerless.

WOODSTOCK REUNION - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
August 04, 2012 - New York

VOODOO CHILD - The longest-running Hendrix show since 1968, performed by the leader Jimy Bleu from the time he was a member of the official Hendrix fan club at Warner/Reprise records 1968-70 "Voodoo Child" has opened for some of the top names in the rock scene, such as Foghat, Slade, Aerosmith & Graham Central Station. They have also appeared at the Woodstock 25th anniversary, Atlanta Pop Festival, Reggae Sun Splash, the 'Rock The Vote Tour', German TV, BBC TV in London and on MTV.

PATRICK STANFIELD JONES - Modern-day troubador and jazz/rock/blues man Patrick Stanfield Jones has been singing and playing the guitar and other sundry instruments professionally since the ripe old age of 14. With gigs ranging from dives to major concert halls, he's shared stages with the likes of Buddy Miles, Taj Mahal, and Kenny Rankin; performed in national theater tours for Jesus Christ Superstar and Oh! Calcutta!; and performed in both jazz and classical arenas. Wisdom gained from this exciting and extensive life on the road inspires both his playing and songwriting on his solo debut on Motema Music, A Heart and an Open Road (2010). "These songs are little eclipses in time; some of it is humorous, and some of it is philosophical," says Jones. "I guess I write in a `genre-melting pot' style because that's what I have experienced both as a person of multi-ethnic roots, and also as an itinerant performer meeting and playing with so many different kinds of people around this country. At the core, these songs paint my picture of American music." As Jones heads out to promote his solo debut, he says he looks forward to continuing his journey of self-discovery and keeping his heart full of love while back on the open road.

NAILED SHUTT - One of the premiere Grateful Dead tribute bands in the tri-state area, "the band was formed back in November of 1999 with a goal to provide a newer twist on some of the old classic Dead tunes and classic rock jams," said Ken Flood, Nailed Shutt's lead guitarist, vocalist and founder.

THE GIPSY KINGS - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
August 05, 2012 - New York

The Gipsy Kings consist of two bands of brothers: the Reyes (Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Patchai, Andre) and the Baliardos (Tonino, Paco, Diego). The Reyes and Baliardo boys were the offspring of Spanish gypsy families that had fled into France to escape Spain's Civil War. They grew up roaming the south of France, working harvests and making music. Today the Gipsy Kings still live with their families in the south of France. Life may have changed for them - they no longer busk on streets or pick crops when times are hard or travel in caravans - but still, at heart, they remain Gypsies, the proud descendants of an ancient people who seduced the world with music and dance. On Pasajero, the Gipsy Kings continue their epic musical journey.

His follow-up release Cool Relax (1998) also went platinum, shooting to the Top 5 of the R&B charts on the strength of the hit singles "They Don't Know," "Are U Still Down," and "I Do (Whatcha Say Boo)." Carolina Chocolate Drops / Buckwheat Zydeco / Abigail Washburn - SummerStage
August 11, 2012 -

In 2005, three young musicians decided to travel every Thursday night to sit in the home of legendary fiddler Joe Thompson for a musical jam session. When the three students decided to form the Carolina Chocolate Drops, they did it mostly as tribute to Thompson, performing his music in dance halls. Specializing in traditional southern music but with a modern twist, the band was an upstart in a stable of deep tradition. With high profile shows including the Grand Ole Opry and the release of albums like Genuine Negro Jig and Luminescent Orchestrii, the group has confirmed its place in the music pantheon with Rolling Stone Magazine describing the band's style as "dirt-floor-dance electricity."

Summer Elegance with DJ Beyond - Highline Ballroom

With BeyondRest, Beyond has worked various NYC parades, collaborated with major clothing designers like Diesel and Azzure, and secured sponsorships with Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Red Bull, and Puma.

The Cataracs - Highline Ballroom
August 11, 2012 -

You could describe the sound of The Cataracs using the familiar terms: "cutting edge," "universal," or "beyond category." And you wouldn't be lying. But save those cliches for a group who needs them. The Cataracs' music and buzz speaks for itself. This songwriting duo and production team of David Singer-Vine, (aka Campa) and Niles Hollowell-Dhar (aka Cyrano) has developed an electro pop sound that combines the dancefloor sensibilities of electronic music with pop melodies, a risque edge, and Bay Area swagger. These divergent sounds converge effectively when brought together by The Cataracs' energy, sense of humor, and undeniably entertaining chemistry.
